What games are you trying to play? Is this a pre-built computer? If so, what is the make/model?

Yep, we need to know the motherboard to know what it will take. Also what games you're trying to play. Also, I wouldn't trust a terrible PSU to an 8800... they weren't the greatest on power.

Yeah, with that age of machine, it could be AGP or PCI-E. Worst case scenario - it only has PCI!

Its got a HIPRO P3087F3
305 max watts

Yeah its pci express x16

Powered down and looked at everything
This is a transplanted Gateway(Different Case)... I dont know what model offhand but those are all the specs

As far as games go
BF2 and BF3
Unreal Tournament Series UT2004, UT3
I also like games like Medieval Total war 2
Rise of Nations type games, Starcraft 2 etc
Diablo 2
World of Warcraft
Lotr Online

You're gonna need a new PC for most of those games...besides maybe BF2 and Diablo 2.

no matter what video card you put in that case..its not gonna play BF3..your gonna need a new computer.

but those other games..sure..just get that 240GT that I posted earlier...honestly though..save the 40 bucks..towards a new rig.

I really doubt a Pentium 4 515 with 512MB of RAM will run almost any of those games besides BF2/D2... Maybe UT2004...

I have an old alienware (Circa 2001 )with an
AMD Thunderbird processor 1GHZ
1GB Ram
Nvidia BFG asylum 256 mb's ram that plays BF2
The hang up with that computer is its processor...

But back to this old Gateway
Im not up to date with the newer vid cards out now so just asking what would be good (taking what you said into consideration Col_Hogan) Will probably go after what you suggested. Just want to see suggestions.

If it doesnt play BF3 or UT3 thats fine.. the point is it will be definately better than what it currently does with 64 mb's of onboard video. I just want to get what I can out of this Computer on the cheap

I can play LOTR online just fine with it but it lags slightly with the onboard video
Im sure it will play ut2004 with a new vid card and some cheap ram

It's a LGA775 board, so you may be able to stick a cheap Core 2 Quad in it and give it some more life.

Okay those are great suggestions and didnt know I could possibly put a core 2 quad on this board

Soooo,

EVGA GeForce GT 240 (probably best bet)
8800GTS 320MB(would have to upgrade PSU to a 400watt)
4650,4670 and 8600gt(will check those out)

thanks guys , I have something to chew on now

I appreciate the help

Do you live near a microcenter? a core i5 quad w/free mobo for $180+tax would do wonders for you. Plus $20-40 for some RAM and you'd be set. Even with integrated gfx, I'd be a nice boost.

You will need a complete new computer. Sorry, but for modern games, every single part of that system is too outdated to be serviceable.

lol, I had to check the date on this thread. even 3 or 4 years ago that pc would be almost useless for modern gaming at that time. you cant come close to playing current games like SC 2 and BF 3 with a 2.93 P4 and 512mb of ram. and if that's the original hipro power supply then it has already made it past its typical life span. by the time you upgrade other stuff its not even worth it in the end.

If you really want to game without replacing that system, first thing you should do is get it up to 2gigs of ram. You should be able to find some dirt cheap on ebay or something. I would also replace that proc with a newer P4 that has hyperthreading. As for the video card... anything that doesn't need an external power connector, maybe something like a radeon 5550. I wouldn't spend anymore than say $80 (total) or so upgrading this thing, after that just save some money and get a new system. Thing is, unlike what some people say around here, there are lots of games you can play on it with some upgrades... although any newer games you are only going to be able to run with min settings.

Come to think of it I should have done the same :)

That'll be enough for some older titles, but nothing current. Even the best P4s are hopelessly underpowered for modern games.

What would a 2.93GHz P4 be equivalent to in Core 2 Duo Conroe terms?

What would a 2.93GHz P4 be equivalent to in Core 2 Duo Conroe terms?

These comparisons are pretty meaningless, but roughly speaking:

3000mhz of a P4 (Prescott) =
2800mhz of a P4 (Northwood)
3000mhz of a Pentium D per core, 1500mhz overall
1500mhz of a Core 2 Duo (conroe) per core, 750mhz overall
1300mhz of a Core 2 Duo (wolfdale) per core, 650mhz overall
1300mhz of a Core 2 Quad (Yorkfield) per core, 325mhz overall
1100mhz of a Core i7 (Bloomfield) per core, 275mhz overall (180mhz if a Gulftown 6 core)
1000mhz of a Core i7 (Sandy Bridge) per core, 250mhz overall

What would a 2.93GHz P4 be equivalent to in Core 2 Duo Conroe terms?
even just one core of the first Core 2 duo series is TWICE as fast as the P4 clock for clock. in other words if I took a more modern E8500, disabled one core, and lowered it to 1.5, it would still be a faster cpu than a 2.93 P4. you would have a hard time running any modern game properly with that slow of a cpu.

Consider the fact that even the fastest Core 2 Duos (3.3Ghz wolfdales) are now starting to become inadequate for some top-end games (for only having two cores), and they're FIVE times as powerful as the CPU you have...
