I just got my Asus A8N-SLi Premium motherboard installed it and I can't use it because apparemtly, my PSU isn't good enough.

What PSU are you guys running with your A8N-SLi's?

I was looking at this one but I don't know if it's any good or if it would even work. What do you think?

Adding another one:

I'm going to be running an eVGA 7800GTx and 1gig of Corsair Value Select ram (for the time being). Are any one of these PSU's any good?

You need to take that first one (the Powmax) off your list NOW!

The second one (the Aspire) is NOT really a 680W. It's 680 w/ 10% regulation (way out of Intel's spec.) It's actually a 550W within the 5%.

The last two (the PCP&C and Antec) are perfect choices.

This is why I post here. :)

Thanks. I'm kind of leaning towards the Antec. But I was looking for something over 600W. Is the Antec 550W going to be enough for the video card and the mobo? I mean, from reading the book it seems like it has an incredible draw. Oh yeah, my proc is an AMD 64 3500+.

You're not really "needing" something "over 600W" right now. Not with a single 7800GTX.

I'm running a pair of 6600GT's, 2GB of Hyper-X and an overclocked 3200+ with "only" a 500W.

My current project build is a pair of 7800's and I'm "only" using a 550W for that.

But if you go with something like an Aspire, you're going to NEED over 600W's because it needs that much overhead to give you decent power at or over 400W!

You need to realize you can't just look at total wattage and lump everything together in one pile. Do you want a gallon of fresh milk or a gallon of sour milk? (Don't answer if you're a conehead)

How about this: A six pack of Old Milwaukee or a six pack of Yuengling? They're both six packs!

Truth be told, not all power supplies are rated the same. A Powmax is rated at peak. How much power can it do for a split nano-second before blowing up. An Aspire is rated at it's wattage assuming it can hold voltages within 10% of their rating. Others are rated at a "sustained" or continuous wattage, and are expected to hold that wattage within 5% of their spec. And if that doesn't over complicate things enough... how is the voltage distributed across the rails? A lot of Thermaltakes, for example, are rated at sustained wattages and are well within the 5% tolerance, but put most of their power on the 5V rail where the power isn't needed.

Yeah, as you can tell I don't understand the whole power supply thing. But that's ok. I made this post so that I can get the best PSU for the money.

So, since I'm only running one 7800GTX I'll be fine with the Antec 550 until I upgrade to a second 7800GTX or better?

And personally, I'd rather have the Yeungling.

How about that one? I hear a lot of talk about this PSU.

That's a good one too.

And as for the Antec... it may actually be good for that second 7800 as well. ;)

Thanks Korruption, I'm ordering it now. hopefully my rig will be up and running by this weekend and I'll be able to get back to F.E.A.R. and CoD2 and Quake 4 and Battlefront II.

I agree with jonnyGURU about avoiding the Powmax.

You see, the 7800GTX *requires* a PSU which can handle at least 26A continuous on the +12V rail (or at least 26A continuous combined +12V capacity on a PSU with multiple +12V rails). The Powmax has only a single +12V rail - and it's a weak one, at that (only 24A peak on the single +12V rail).

Also, Thermaltake isn't the only PSU brand which puts most of the power on its PSUs on the +5V rail. Coolermaster is another.

I just got through ordering the Antec PSU in Korruption's post.

It should be realistically here by monday or tuesday of next week and I can fire up my new rig.

You've made a good, budget-conscious choice for SLI. I don't know offhand about the maximum combined +12W output of that PSU (since Antec does not give that info for its TPII series), but I'd estimate its maximum (continuous) combined +12V amperage capacity at about 35A. (34A on the +12V is the minimum spec required for SLI certification.)

Thanks, I can't wait to use my new mobo and video card. I've got a pile of games that need to get played and the pile only gets larger as the weeks go by.

I figure it'll be good enough for me to run 7800GTx and then in a few months when I'm ready to install a second one I'll have had more time to research PSUs.

id get the antec TP2.0 550 :)

oh you ordered it already, good choice!

btw: my antec neopower480 (15a and 17a on two 12v rails) runs a 6800GT SLI without a hitch, with an X2 at 2.4ghz and 1.45v. that one will defiantly handle anything

I have to throw this in, seasonic s12-600....i just built a new rig with one, its rock solid, heavy as hell and best of all (imo) its virtually silent....

I wish you had chimed in earlier, I would have bought this one instead. But as it is I've already got the Antec one coming and I'm not going to wait to see if I can exchange it.
