hey, regarding this thread: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=801533

i'm building a box to OC to fold, it'll also be my first attempt at WCing, and at modding..heh...lotta firsts :p

anyways, i'd realllllly like to bring the cost down...so if anyone has any (working ;)) HDDs they can spare..i'll pay S&H.

thanks!

EDIT: I don't have any HDDs left to send the poor guy, somebody's got to have a 2GB or better HDD sitting around. -relic

I have 2 1.6gb drives here. I'm fairly sure at least one of them works.

Would they be big enough for you? I'll test them and post back when I find out if they work.

After reading you other post, I might also have an old AGP videocard to help you reduce costs too. I can't seem to find it right at the moment, but I'll keep looking.

sweet. yeah, i think it will. i'll just run Win98SE or WinXP, and then of course, fold.

that'd be awesome...i should have posted my system build in this form, not crappy OC&C :p

Who needs a hard drive when you can use an OS on a CD-rom? Look, I can run memtest, prime, seti, or folding by booting a CD in one minute- no installation whatsoever! Web browser office-clone, IM clients, image editor, video players, mp3 rippers, p2p softwarez.....

/insert sick Linux pics

Im a total linux noob how did you get folding and seti to run in knoppix with no install?

arkaine and his boys did it all for you in a linux distro called overclockix. check the sticky, or I'm sure arkaine will post some more about it :)

What he said ^.

Rebuilt Knoppix with some of these things pre-installed. Wrote scripts which download an run foldingg@home in the ramdisk automatically when you boot. All you ususally have to do is edit client.cfg file and restart the client.

I should probably update the iso, its 3 months old....

interesting...but don't i need a HDD for the MBR (master boot record) and whatnot?

and how much RAM does that take? i'll only have 256 MB...

can you OC w/ Linux systems? i tried OCing my Duron machine, but Mandrake 10.0 wouldn't boot AT ALL w/ my FSB up ANY from stock :(
(it WOULD boot w/ Win98  )

also, folding is more efficient in Windows, is it not?

Bumpity.

Did we get the [H]ardBrother fixed up?

Let me know I can help out where i can with case / video card / hdd if needed just pay shipping let me know

Boots directly from the CD, no need of hdd at all.

Folding is as fast with gromacs WU, and maybe 10-25% slower at tinker depending on project. For this reason I included a windows folding cleint and wine as an option. Then you can fold just as fast as windows on every WU.

It can fold on 128mb ram as long as the WU's are not huge. 256mb would be better for those huge WU's. If you run out of free ram, the WU dies. The sys uses about 90mb or so just sitting there in KDE, so that's room enough for big WU's on 256mb just barely.

You could choose to boot into a lighter WM than KDE or even into text mdoe which would give more free ram.

You can also enable some optional features if you have a small hard drive or usb pen drive such as

persistent home- saves settings and files across a reboot (including folding progress)
swapfile- gives you some more security against running out of ram

It can also install to a 2.2GB+ hard drive, and the OS is free (aka no license fee).

There's only half a dozen commands to familiarize yourself with to get handy at folding and stress-testing with this OS. Its handy for any folder in case of hard drive failure, lack of hard drive, or situations of borked windows + no time to reinstall.

There's also Overclockix_LTSP 2.0 which is more folding-oriented with less fluff. It's runs 2 folding clients and is generally meant to be installed to HDD and used as an LTSP server for net-booting diskless layers of a monster farm. It uses the windows cleint by default.

i'll pay shipping you can most definately help.

Arkaine: all right, i guess i'll be using your OS.....OCing DOES work in it, right?

OCing is pretty OS indepentent. linux just happens to stress the system a lot more on boot up than windows does, so it is less likely to work on an overclocked system. it is just like trying to run prime95 versus a game. the game still puts a load on the system, and could technically crash the computer, but prime95 is a LOT more likely to. however, the system isn't really stable (for folding especially... prime is a DC project too, just not really as worthy of a goal) unless prime runs properly.

so yes, you should be fine for the overclocking in overclockix. good luck!

mmk, thanks!

You still need a HDD Carnival?

One of the 1.6gb drives I have works fine, and I can send it to you if you want.

Sorry for dropping out of the thread, but I lost my internet connection for a week when I moved back to school.

I wasn't able to find that old video card, but the HDD is available.

Just PM me if you want it.

I might still have a pci vid card somewhere if interested.
also might have something a tad bit bigger than 1.6 if interested
