Anybody know of any sites that sell decent looking tables/desks? I want to look for something good before I have to settle for a cheap generic table.

DIY. It's simple enough. get some 2x2, or 4x4 if you want, some nice, thick plywood, and you're golden. Cost should be less than $50 bucks. Correct me if im wrong woodworkers.

hahahah i was thinking just the same thing

It depends how sturdy and accurate you want it. You can build a desk for completely free but it won't be that good. I'm going to do you guys and whoever else posts here a big favor and say how to get free wood. No, not stealing.

Call up a local contracting/building company. Ask if you can see some of their build sites to look at their work. If there are people there, just ask them if you can take some scrap wood from the dumpster. Trust me, they have plenty of 2x4's and plywood. Now, you could easily just put 4 upright legs with a ring of 2x4's around the top (holding them in place) with some nails, then hammer the playwood in. This is the most simple way to do it, however I usually in projects like this go out and buy some 90 degree angle corners and some screws to make sure the angles are proper.

Make sure you sand the edges. You don't want sharp edges or slivers. I would say you need about 3' by 6' top for a normal desk. For a special computer tray, it's gonna be harder for a non-woodworker to implement a rolling one using side brackets, however a static one of just a board sticking out is easy. Also, bestbuy sells some okay ones like this and this .

Cinder blocks and countertops. You just don't get any sturdier than that. I had my turntables on that for some time until I could afford something else. Both are easily procurable if you are resourceful enough or live in an area with good growth (lots of construction).

Here's my vote for the ikea JERKER desk. (go to http://www.ikea.com/ and type in "JERKER" into their search box)

The basic version without the extra shelf is pretty cheap (89$ Canadian), and VERY sturdy. It can easily accomidate a trio of 21 inch CRTs, looks decent without any "frillyness". It is easy to assemble/re-adjust AND disassemble+transport (that's a big one for me), and also comes in 3 colors.

One of the main appeals of this desk is that for its sub-100$ price range, it beats desks from other places.. At this price range you are usually talking about unstable/ugly/flexing Walmart junk, typically made of particleboard, and is hard to assemble + dismantle.

One thing to note is that the JERKER desk isn't for everyone, and some people don't like its aesthetics, but if you are in the market for something cheap AND sturdy, look no further.

Good luck with your search.

Great choice. I've had my Jerker computer desk for over 5 years. It's a great inexpensive desk.

Heres my Jerker:

As Configured, i think i spet something like $140, Basic desk is $100, I added the wings and the second shelf, they also sell stuff like CD and document holders for it. I LOVE Ikea, cheep high quality stuff. I love my desk!

I recently lost my house to a fire and needed a quick low cost desk solution for my computer at my rented house. I found a birch blond L desk ( no drawers) contemporary with black iron frame for just 79 bucks at staples .I would show a pick but my Nikon was a victum of the fire . It even has a mini hutch thingy

Demolition sale in your area?

You can usually find nice solid core hardwaood doors in older buildings. They make decent work surfaces, and are usually w[h]icked strong if they are maple or oak doors.

My parents computer desk is made from an old birds eye maple door, solid core.

Nice....bird'seys maple is spendy too!

If you go the DIY way...you might as well go gusto. If you make it to last, and with higher quality materials, then it should be a desk for life.

That's a real nice desk.

Depends on how you define "cheap". Staples/Office Depot occasionally have basic desks for ~$50.
