I'm selling my Canon S230- it's crap. Horrid autofocus. It takes a full two seconds for a shot- you don't get used to something like that. The image quality is also rather bad.

I had a Fuji Finepix A101, nice cam.

I've looked at several Optio, Fuji, Canon, and Sony cameras, yet none of them quite meet my needs.

I need something small, 3+MP. Must have fast autofocus.

I'm looking at the Finepix F700, as I've always liked Fuji cameras. I've heard issues of flash exposure problems, yet this sounds like an easy fix. The price is the major drawback. Is the interpolation really worth it?

IQ is about average for a compact 3mp camera. There's certainly worse out there.

almost impossible

fast autofocus somes with cameras that are larger (the cheapest with decent quick AF is the F717 - a big chunk of a camera). However the new F828 is even significantly faster. And of course with DSLRs it's an entire new world.

There are a few compact cameras with faster autofocus (ie f700) but I don't know if any of these cameras have the best of both worlds (fast af + good image quality). If you think the image quality of the S230 is bad, I can only imagine what you'd think of the F700.

s230

f700

The interpolation does not help the resolution at all. It's a 3mp camera and know that going in.

Is the F700 worth the money? It's $80 more than other 3MP cameras, yet shot time is a major concern. Are there better options?
I also need to photograph at very close range (5cm).

Why is autofocus poor on smaller cameras?

I took photos indoors with my Canon cam and they did not look quite as good as that one.

What about the Dimage XT?

I didn't mean that autofocus was only poor for small cameras. It is in fact poor on most "digicams," small or large. It's just the fact that many of the smaller cameras lack things such as AF assist lamps that make focusing quicker. Also, larger cameras such as the two Sonys I mentioned have lazer-assisted focusing systems that make them focuser better than other cameras. And then there's the fact that DSLRs all focus fast and they are all huge.

So there is a trend. But by no means do all large cameras focus well and all small cameras focus slow.

Most of these cameras are worse indoors. There is degredation while taking indoor pics with the S230, but expect a similar decline with the other compacts as well.

No experience with the XT.

My friend just got a Minolta Dimage Z1 and its supposed to have the fastest autofocus. 10x optical, I think 3mp maybe 4. But the focus is really fast...tested it first hand.

I got the S700, the quality is much worse than I expected. Worse than my A101. I'm wondering how they managed that! Perhaps I have a defective model?

I'll try my luck at the Kyocera FineCam SL300R

It's an experience.

Knock Knock.

Have you looked at ANY full sized samples on the web?

I can't imagine the quality being worse. You need to see for yourself if the quality is standard for that camera or if you have a defective model (which I doubt).

I have. They were tolerable.

My Canon A80 has pretty fast AF, and its really quite good. It's pretty small, and if i set it to the rapid fire mode it still gets good AF and its like 3FPS with a high speed card.
