sorry to be a doofus ..but I have always heard of people making their own network cables but had never tried to make one myself

so when i saw this trendnet crimp tool for $10 @ frys i decided to grab it

I had a old cable with broken connectors so I cut the old connector off and crimped on the new connector

hooked it up and BAM first try seems to work good.

sorry for horrid cellphone pic

so what else can i do to test my work to make sure the cable is now all up to snuff?

I am very pleased with myself ATM :D

Now is a good time to purchase a spool of Cat6 and wire your house

sweet ...i apparently win then it seems

just transfered a few 1GB files to the little laptop worked great.

wiring the house yes...that would be very nice indeed.. that was something i was thinking about when I grabbed the crimp tool @ frys

oh yeah...so being left handed I totally had to think through the instructions for the tool at every step because it is ass backwards trying to use it left handed... oh well such is life for the lefty :)

If you do wiring a lot you can buy an ethernet cable tester. Basically there's two boxes with batteries in them, plug one into each end of your cable, if the numbered LEDs flash at the same time they cable works.

Also exactly the tool you want to troubleshoot network problems which may have to do with bad cable.

Shortest YouTube example ever

Making your own cables can be fun.. what's not fun is getting your finger stuck in a ratcheting crimper in which you need to squeeze it all the way down to get the tool to release.

^ That's the same one I have. It's cheap, but it works so wth. We have one at work, but it doesn't show you the pairs on the master end. It shows it sending a signal, but you don't know if the pair is good unless you look at the remote unit. It's a PITA. I like mine where it shows you either end if the pairs are all good.

I used to like making my own cables till I found out about Monoprice. I can't justify making my own anymore unless I need it NOW and don't have any on hand in the right size.

kewl..thank you .. maybe I'll get a tester that would be nice to have.

Testers are cheap now A days.

So did you use A or B ?

I have the same tool, works great :)

What RedSquirrel said. I still carry a modular plug crimper but it mostly gets used for phone plugs.

I share your frustrations. Even signing your name on those credit card machines at stores are a pain in the ass. This world was made for right handed people. Us south paw's need to stick together ;)

I had been planning to put new connectors on my cables for months... I finally sat down to do it and realized how much trouble it was so I said fk it.

it was a bit challenging making sure the wires are in the right spot ...but I was quite pleased with myself indeed when i hooked it up and it worked

I would like to do my own network cable because if you buy them premade one from monoprice is not always the best thing in case you need a custom length.

Canadian electricians love to use A... I prefer to stick with B for all my patches.

Congratulations, here's a cookie:

Damn skippy! We make the world go round :D

This...but make sure you get solid, not stranded. It's less expensive, for one, and using stranded wire is not proper for punch-down connections.

Congrats OP, things like this can be a huge milestone. I know when I first did this I was very proud.

Monoprice FTW

I use B as well. I only started making my own cables a few years ago, when I was more active in LAN parties. I got a spool, and some cheep crimpers. I love it!

Ah, it's all a slippery slope from here. :p

It starts with some small patch cables, then you get bored and start redoing your phone lines.... cable lines are all a mess, so you run some coax...

......then you realize that you've run gig-e to the bathroom. ;)

Back on topic - Great job OP!
