I’m a PC

What's your point? All advertising is designed to make other products look inferior
No, that's APPLE advertising.
REAL-WORLD advertising shows you how great THEIR OWN products are. Like I've said many times: you don't mention your competition.

This is the true power and genious of Microsoft and why Microsoft has generated so much REAL wealth as a company vs. the fake wealth off Wall Street. They have given ordinary people an extraordinary tool in the PC and made it affordable and easy to use for the most part. I know that a lot of people will disagree with this assessment but this is how I and a lot of people see it. And by a lot I mean hundreds of millions.
Never thought of that, but it's true.
In the ages of tech companies rising and fallen, Microsoft has always reigned king.

I approve! Shows how all kinds of people use PC's while only hipsters use MAC =P

You must not watch TV much then. Many advertisements compare their products directly with other products, everything from soda, to beer, to laundry detergent. It's nothing new, it's been going on for decades. The only thing that's different here is that the MS fanboys get their feelings hurt and have to bash on Apple.

i don't watch tv anymore, so i'm genuinely asking... i thought there were laws against bashing other products in ads, under slander or something.

Wow someone's been living under a rock. Microsoft bashes on Apple? ROFL.

I think it's one of the best commercials M$ has done in ages.
Thumb's up.

We appreciate your insightful commentary.

Oh yeah... ROFL

Dude quit being such a fucking fanboy and open your eyes and watch both commercials.

We know your extreme hatred for anything anything Microsoft. It doesn't make you right. Deal with it.

I didn't even see anyone mention the environmental aspect of the commercial. That perhaps is the number one subliminal slammer I saw.

I like how they have Bill holding a grocery bag. He's just like regular people! Either that or he's still living with that everyday-Americana family from the 2nd ad.

Apple ads aren't just about attempting to cast a negative perception for Vista. Although that is also part of the campaign, the broader aspect is to intoduce a stereotype for PC users as frumpy, outdated, overweight and out of touch. This Microsoft ad in particular is about breaking the stereotype Apple is trying to assign to PC users, They are pointing out that there are PC and Windows users in virtually all walks of life; in fact, more than a Billion of them, and that stereotype is completly unfounded.

Personally, all Apple has done is convince me to avoid their products like the plague.

well put.

It's funny you say that because just the other day my girlfriend couldn't get her printer to work with Vista, she spent over an hour trying different drivers, AND Vista crashed one her, so she gave up.

{quote]UAC constantly gets in the way (even though Apple has had a similar feature for ages) etc.

UAC does constantly get in the way, that's why I turned it off.[/QUOTE]

Man your girlfriend is doing all kinds of things wrong...
Couldnt install a printer?
And on vista at that?

I only read the first page of posts but I'm going to respond to this anyways because the stupidity of it aggravated the shit out of me.

I thought it was a nice commercial. Some political stuff in there too, sure that will pick up a few extra customers.

Not like apple commercials with all the BS.

How the hell is it political in any way whatsoever??? It has a guy who supports McCaine and a guy who supports Obama. You do realize that means the ad was politically unbiased, right? What the hell is your point, again? What was so unacceptable about the the fact that modern presidential candidates' names were uttered that made you feel compelled to 2/3rds of your posts writing about? Consider this constructive social criticism... ugh...

I don't think Microsoft is making these commercials for the right people. A lot of you guys like it, which is good, but you're already probably fans of things not apple so you appreciate the tasteful ad. I bet most other people will find it boring and useless since it doesn't point out the ways in which windows is better than os x.

No, it showed that the Mac Commercials depiction of PC users is complete bullshit, which is something most tech users have known since Day 1.

Aside from technical people, most people don't really buy based on relevant facts, they buy based on emotions, image and advertising.

Is it perfect? No, but at least it wasn't total bs like some of the mac ads, which seemed to harp on problems that Windows hadn't had in years.

I picked up on that too, felt very "earthy" to me.

It's okay I didn't think you'd be able to find any "blatant lies" either.
Hmmm, how about the one where they claim Windows can't talk to the new hardware from Japan and Mac can???
Windows supports MILLIONS if not BILLIONS of more hardware configurations than Apple does.
Therefore: blatant lie.

Personally, all Apple has done is convince me to avoid their products like the plague.

QFT. I was always just "dont go out of my way for it" in recent years, now I just AVOID it all together. Granted I have to screw with it if I don't have say-so in what gets used though...

I cracked up at the unexpected diving cage.

I laughed pretty hard at the beard guy...I'm not sure if it's because it was totally random or because of an article I read a while back about computer scientists and beards.

Was good up until the punch line "without walls" HAH. Try re-writing anything in windows, good luck with that reverse engineering.

If windows has no walls, then GNU/Linux and BSD comparatively is the entirety of space.

The no walls is with respect to using it/usability. Windows may or may not be as intuitive as a Mac, but I use Windows, I use Solaris and i use Ubuntu. Windows is more intuitive than Solaris or Ubuntu (though in fairness, there's no GUI on Solaris). Linux has come a long way, but it's not ready for the masses.....or, if you prefer, the masses aren't ready for Linux.

Home users, in general, couldn't care less about open source, free licenses, or GNU. Ask, a typical PC/Mac user about GNU, and they'll either give you a funny look or start talking about the Flintstones. All they want is something that they can use.

Sorry to disagree guys, I didn't like it.

Apple's campaign is successful in reaching the average Joe and telling them that Macs can pretty much do everything the PC does, and better.

I disagree. Mac commercials say that only work drones use PC's and that all the cool people use macs.

Do they say other things? Yes, but most of those are, at best, half-truths. The reality is that most (all?) of the things you can do on a mac, you can do on a PC. From a game perspective, the Mac isn't even an also ran, though if PC gaming dies, then that won't matter.

This commercials says, "Lot's of different types of people use PCs and a lot of them are pretty cool."

Very well put. I will say the Apple commericals made me chuckle a fews times, I still thought they were way out of line for directly bashing on PCs and there users.

Im a PC and I game.

I thought that was a good commercial. But man... took them awhile to respond to those Mac Vs. PC ads.

The one pic, that's what they need to show.

The one with countless different looking people saying "I'm a PC", and then countless copies of that one thunderdouche saying "I'm a Mac".

That is brilliant. Just 10 second still image on the TV.

super gay. these ads do nothing to dispel the implied notion that macs are better, only that some very average people use PCs. *because, ya know, I aspire to be average like them

Wow, an astronaut is an average person to you?! I'd like to know what planet you're from.

As opposed to Obama's long resume of accomplishment? The guy hasn't run a hot dog stand, let alone a city or a state. And what are his legislative accomplishments
The qualification beef against Obama is about as unjustified and ignorant as the Mac commercials. Do the mods a favor and stay on topic.

Apparently you didn't read your own link

i'd like it better if they blew up 1000 mac's all at once.. a huge explosive fireball of mac parts.. now that is the commercial i want to see

Man your girlfriend is doing all kinds of things wrong...
Couldnt install a printer?
And on vista at that?

Well considering that she successfully installed it and used it in XP for years.... Vista can't possibly have problems!

It's okay I didn't think you'd be able to find any "blatant lies" either.
Blatant lies like the UK ad where the Mac "everything just kinda works with a mac" including the new japanese printer that doesn't with the PC or the one about how iLife works right out of the box while the PC has to download drivers, whipe off trial software, etc before it can edit a video album. I also like the one where the PC freezes and restarts twice while the mac says they don't have to worry about that. Funny how that works, my workstation froze twice tonight requiring a hard restart. Those seem like blatant lies if I've ever heard them. Face it, their entire ad campaign is based on deception.

Sorry to disagree guys, I didn't like it.

Apple's campaign is successful in reaching the average Joe and telling them that Macs can pretty much do everything the PC does, and better.

What does this campaign say? "Hey, a bunch of people uses PCs!"

Guess what: duh!

I don't think it's going to be a failure, after all these ads are not targeted to computer-savvy consumers, but to people who buys computers like they buy cars: psychological reasons, like status ("Famous ppl using PCs? So will I!")

But in the end of the day I think the Apple ads do a better job reaching the same target. (Not to mention that they were much more original...) :)

I agree with you to a point. They are just trying to show that celebs use them and so should you. But I think it goes deeper than that. If you sit and watch it without the biased against M$, it does make more sense. Its a good ad that I am not sitting at home saying to myself, "Thats a slanted view", like I used to do with the Apple commercials.

I have alot of friends that I do computer work for and they would come and ask me occasionally about Apple/ Macs. I would tell them they are good computers, then get into support issues. Finding software, unless you order online or live in a large city. The stuff Apple ads failed to mention.

Very well put. I will say the Apple commericals made me chuckle a fews times, I still thought they were way out of line for directly bashing on PCs and there users.

Im a PC and I game.

I liked some of the early ones, but eventually, I just found the misinformation outweighed the entertainment value. Bashing is fine if it's true. But when the bashing is based problems that rarely occur (unless you count people who installed the latest version of iTunes ).

As all political consultants will tell you, negative advertising works, but I dislike it in politics and I like it even less in technology.

Hello I am a PC (Crysis playing) Hello I am a MAC (Solitaire playing)

Thats all a commercial needs to show.

See right away I hate mac commercials because they say im a pc instead I am windows. After all a pc runs LINUX too. Every OS has flaws you dont have to make a commercial about them. You dont see microsoft showing the annoying click to unlock feature on mac that u have to do twice to actually install printers! Least vista's biggest problem can be fixed by turning uac off. I just installed Vista 64bit and everything works without a probem. Only took almost 2 years for programs/drivers to catch up. This is where the mac really shines. Invisible 64bit support to the user.

Well considering that she successfully installed it and used it in XP for years.... Vista can't possibly have problems!

I don't know what printer she has, but many companies don't create printer drivers for old models. With that said, in many cases ms includes a driver with vista.

That may not be the case with the cheapest models (I'm just hypothesizing). If that's the case, then the logic would go something like this: the newer printers are better, they often sell for less than ink, so buying a replacement is essentially free.

One thing I do disagree with is UAC always getting in the way. That's only the case if you're using older apps or apps that aren't written to comply with MS coding standards set out in 2001.

In day to day use, I don't have that much of a problem with UAC. However, if I was reinstalling tons of software on a daily basis, it'd be a PITA. There are ways around most issues, WITHOUT turning off UAC, which is a dumb move, IMO. You might was well go back to XP at that point.
