I’m a PC

Can't seem to edit...

It's also very mature, which I like, it's not being an asshole or arrogant or condescending. It's simply an ad about PCs, not about Apple and PCs or Windows.

They should have had someone taking a bite out of an apple after they said, "I'm a PC". (then take a bite out of an apple).

They gave the term "PC" to microsoft. How dumb can you get. They handed them "Personal Computer" on a plate. I'm no marketing genius, but I wouldn't want to use the most well known term for a product in whatever market I'm in for the competitor's product.
Just one of the things they gave to Microsoft.
Again: mentioning competition will always bite you in the butt down the road: Apple will have rude awakening of that fact before too long.

No, the reason why Macs now have so many virus', exploits, etc is because of increased market share. Before, the market share was so low, why even bother?

It's both. The apps themselves are buggy (You have to be kidding me if you say Quicktime isn't buggy...), but increased market share plays a role too. Granted, Die-Hard Apple fanboys would come up with some cock and bull how the fact increasing market share and increasing security vulnerabilities aren't related...

And also, maybe it's just me- but this is the first time I've seen a Windows/Microsoft ad since I can remember...

And also, maybe it's just me- but this is the first time I've seen a Windows/Microsoft ad since I can remember...

You probably just don't remember the old ones you have seen. They were bad.

And Quicktime is absolute garbage software, just go download the k-lite codec pack and you never ever have to even think about installing that buggy crap-infested shit Quicktime ever again.

And also, maybe it's just me- but this is the first time I've seen a Windows/Microsoft ad since I can remember...

Most Windows ad hadn't been needed because there are multitudes of OEM ads from Dell, HP, Gateway and so on which advertises their computers with Windows on it anyways.

The only reason why Microsoft is getting serious about ads now is because the Vista FUD campaign was getting out of hand and Apple wasn't helping, so they had to step up on the plate and put a stop to it.

At least that's my opinion.

To paraphrase a line from one of the all-time funniest movies (IMO) evah:

"In Microsoft's adolescent awkwardness, it blamed it on a passing Apple ad. BIG MISTAKE!"

Apple may not be perfect, but it has the Teflon "Hip" aura going for it... regardless of what you do, you are attacking Apple where it is strong, as opposed to reminding people of why Apple needs to attack you in the first place. If Microsoft does that, they give Apple the initiative in the battle to define what Vista is, and what Apple is. Give up the initiative, and you lose, that's been an axiom since Sun Tzu.

Microsoft needs to hit Apple THE OTHER WAY.... by showing (if I can make one last illusion) how it's "Hip to be square" and that sometimes the Hip gal can be just another pretty face, with nothing there but vacuum between the ears, so to speak.

In other words, in the end (going back to that great comedy movie) "I'm sorry Apple, but there's not enough beer in the world." needs to be the final rallying cry.

While I don't think the situation is so dire that they've lost the battle/war/etc, this would definitely make for a good Phase 3 in their ad campaign. If only they read [H]...

Was good up until the punch line "without walls" HAH. Try re-writing anything in windows, good luck with that reverse engineering.

If windows has no walls, then GNU/Linux and BSD comparatively is the entirety of space.

apples and oranges.

this isn't about linux. Linux is a whole different ballgame.

this is strictly pc vs mac, because they are both trying to win the same market.

Linux has a long way to go before it exists in the market they are targeting. Linux is fantastic if you know what you are doing or if you want to spend the time. However, the average heavy computer user (not using the term enthusiast because that does start to include linux groups) just wants to turn on, play games, or do their work/hobbies without fuss. So yeah you can't really compare the market share they are looking to capture here. Enthusiasts of both the linux and windows worlds are already smart enough to know the mac ads are bs.

I think the without walls comment is more entailing to being able to feel comfortable having a piece of hardware or software work on windows without having to worry about compatibility...thus allowing them more options and usability.

Pretty much. Funny how that poster complains about the "without walls" punchline when Apple's the most walled-in operating system on the face of the planet.

Hi I'm Mac I'm now becoming a prevalent target of hackers and viruses due to my buggy Quicktime, iTunes, and Safari apps so basically I'm exactly like a PC except way more expensive and way less variety of applications and hardware!

Couldn't say it better myself.

I don't own, nor will I ever own an Apple product. PC all the way babeee!

That was very very good. It mixes celebutards with the average folks. Looks like MS has finally found it's marketing legs.

I don't think Microsoft is making these commercials for the right people. A lot of you guys like it, which is good, but you're already probably fans of things not apple so you appreciate the tasteful ad. I bet most other people will find it boring and useless since it doesn't point out the ways in which windows is better than os x.

Even if MS pointed out why their product is better, most of it would be wasted because the average consumer doesn't really understand it anyway.

It doesn't have to. The average Joe doesn't buy a piece of electronics because it's better than another....they buy it because of an image, it's popularity, and because they recognize the name. Think about it, which was the better player at the time...the iPod or the Zen Vision:M? The Vision:M was the superior product by a country mile but it still struggled to sell against the iPod. People bought the iPod because it was a brand they were familiar with.....it carried a stigma. Now if you're say, my mother, and you're looking to buy a computer which are you going to buy....a Mac which has had mean and arrogant ads or a PC who'se taken the nice everyguy image? Lets face it, image sells....that's why Palin is the VP pick and not one of hundreds of people more qualified.

I totally agreed with you until the last phrase which was an entirely unwarranted political dig.

No, the reason why Macs now have so many virus', exploits, etc is because of increased market share. Before, the market share was so low, why even bother? All OS's, and apps, have holes.

Oh, but all the Mactards used to say that marketshare was irrelevant. Windows security just sucked, while Mac security was so superior. Well, Windows security did suck (much improved now), while Mac security apparently STILL sucks.

I don't own, nor will I ever own an Apple product. PC all the way babeee!
I wouldn't go that far. If Apple were to actually make something that I wanted- I'd use it, as long as it would work.
However that puts them in competition with Microsoft directly, and they won't survive in that pond...

Just had to QFT.

On top of that- Windows security has gotten better, while gaining more and more users.
Apple security has gotten worse.

I like it.

I don't get why they're advertising "PC" instead of "Microsoft" or "Windows." The term PC just makes me think of IBM....

Well played out. It shows that Micro$oft (on the surface anyway) wants to target a more casual market than "geeks".

Isn't it the "geeks" that are the most against Microsoft? The guys who run out and shout LINUX from the rooftops?

I don't own, nor will I ever own an Apple product.
I have their phone and I can honestly say I've never owned a piece of electronics that crashes as often. Same goes for the two G5's I operate at work. I'm the only PC user in my office and everyone swears by their Apple electronics even when they have problems. "Yeah my mac crashes every 5 minutes but it's still superior product." iCult marketing, can't beat it.

I like it.

Because thanks to Apple, it is now Mac vs. PC - even though Macs run PC hardware now. MS just ran with what they were given from Apple, and I must say, they did a damned good job of it.

Dell, Toshiba, Sony, ASUS, Compaq, Acer, Emachines, etc fall in the PC group. Market for MS or Windows and it's a small group...might as well say PC and widen your branding.

The commercial was pointless. The apple commercials at least address differences, and what the apple can do compared to a PC. (from their perspective of course)

But this commercial has me thinking, what are they saying? That a PC lounges at the pool, plays basketball, paints on walls, etc. The ad makers seem to have completely missed the point of the apple commercials in this rebuttal, which is not a rebuttal since it doesn't counter any of the claims made in the apple commercial. Simply stupid. Must be the same company that did the seinfeld, gates commercials.

You're thinking too hard about it.

The point of the Apple ads is to leave potential buyers with the impression that:

1) Macs are cool and hip and let you do cool and hip things
2) Macs can do all the business things PCs do
3) PCs are nerdy and geeky

This Microsoft ad is indeed a direct counter to that. The point of this ad is to leave potential buyers with the impression that:

1) PCs aren't nerdy and geeky
2) PCs are cool and hip and let you do all sorts of cool and hip things
3) Those other guys are lying to you

I like that ad much better than the Seinfeld ads.

I really like Seinfeld, just didn't like the ads they came up with.

How about, the PC does everything you need it to do. The PC is for all users and has the support and software need to perform all these tasks.

The Apple commercials are just annoying and FUD.

I like it.

I don't get why they're advertising "PC" instead of "Microsoft" or "Windows." The term PC just makes me think of IBM....

They are using PC as "people connecting." Microsoft is highlighting that Windows is part of a common language uniting people around the globe. As some of the print ads come out it will be illustrated more easily. Microsoft is putting a focus on "people connecting" and it encompasses more than just the PC. The "people connecting" theme carries over to their mobile products, the laptops, media center, etc. So the purpose in using PC isn't necessarily to highlight the "personal computer" but all the technology products that Microsoft has to connect people.

I thought it was relatively* good. Seemed like the point was to be a bit more outward-looking than the self-absorbed Apple crap. Although the fact that it's a response to the I'm a Mac ads, even though they didn't go overboard with that side of it, really means MS are playing a sort of "follow the leader", when they should perhaps be setting themselves up as leaders.

* all commercials being worthless, ultimately

Sorry to disagree guys, I didn't like it.

Apple's campaign is successful in reaching the average Joe and telling them that Macs can pretty much do everything the PC does, and better.

What does this campaign say? "Hey, a bunch of people uses PCs!"

Guess what: duh!

I don't think it's going to be a failure, after all these ads are not targeted to computer-savvy consumers, but to people who buys computers like they buy cars: psychological reasons, like status ("Famous ppl using PCs? So will I!")

But in the end of the day I think the Apple ads do a better job reaching the same target. (Not to mention that they were much more original...) :)

I thought the Seinfeld ads were terrible but I liked this one. Yes, I saw the symbolism of the Seinfeld ads, I still thought they were boring and unfunny. I liked this one for clearly making it's point and showing "PC" users as being connected, very diverse and all encompassing.
