I'm upgrading from my Athlon XP 2000.

I just order this barebone system:
Athlon 64 3000+
Asus KV8
512mb DDR400
Rounded IDE Cables

I'm pretty stoked. I currently am running a Geforce 4400. I eventurally want to get one of those radeon cards everyone seems to be raving about. 9700 Pro seems to be in my budget.

Anyway, any thoughts on people with similar setups.... or what other hardware I should get would be great.

Will I run into any problems? I've never used a Athlon 64 but have been buying VIA motherboards for quite sometime.

My primary uses on the computer are Gaming, Internet Browsing, Computer Graphics (Photoshop), School, and Music Recording/Mastering. Peace.

The memory is going to be a stumbling block. Did you go with a reccomended memory for the proc? Normally the reccomended memory is high dollar but you will need fast memory for the processor because it has the memory controller on die.

And the video card deal right now appears to be the 9800pro from newegg for around 200.

Will be a sweet box when you are done.

I have a similiar setup.

64 3000+
AOpen AK86L
1 Gig 3200 2-2-2-6
Gf 4400

The one thing you will want to look into is memory compatibility issues. I had quite a few from the start. I think I've finally gotten my system running at 100% stability. However, I am using rather exotic ram. In your case you probably won't have any problems at all.

i have no problem what-so-ever with your memory; you just need more of it ;)

i second the 9800pro statement made above.

Yo, speaking of ram, could you recomend some? I'll be picking up a A64 3200+ sometime soon. Also, uh, whats the differance with Unbuffered and Registered?

you need more ram, MORE the merrier!! probably a gig or two

one question, is the athlon 64 chips overclockable?

I think so, i've seen a few overclocked pictures of them...

the athlon 64s overclock decently, atleast for being first generation chips. The largest limitation at the moment is the motherboard chipsets because they don't correctly lock the PCI/AGP bus.

As for memory capacity, buy what you can afford but 512 is more than enough for anything but the upcoming DX9 games (if the ever get to the market  )

I have an Athlon64! I just wanted to say that. I bought Corsair Value Ram, 1GB of it, and 1/2 of it is defective, go figure, but the other half seems to run pretty good. I even OC'd my 3200+ to 2.2Ghz with a 220Mhz FSB. I backed it down due to heat issues....I'd rather have a slower, longer-lasting system than one that dies in 4 months from heat build-up ;) Anyway, that sounds like a sweet setup, except I'd go for an extra 512MB of RAM when you get the chance.

were they on fire?

why is locking the pci/agp bus important for overclocking?

Google this. Or go to Anandtech and check out their latest article on the buses.

Basically, in some motherboards, the PCI and AGP bus frequencies work off of the FSB, through the use of "dividers". This means that if you increase the FSB, the PCI and AGP buses increase also. When they increase too much, PCI and AGP devices stop working. Since the IDE interface works off the PCI bus, your harddrives stop working effectively and you get loads of data corruption. Your video card freaks out and your onboard stuff may stop working also.

none of the pics i've seen were on fire.

read the reviews, they'll answer most of your simple (such as the above ones) questions. For instance, the [H] has a great review on teh A64's at www.hardocp.com ; also, anandtech has an excellent review as well (www.anandtech.com).
