As the title states, I just picked this up. I got the Special Edition DVD set from my local EB Games. A word of warning, if you didn't prebook the SE edition you will probably want to skip EB. It looks as if they only got enough to fill the prebooks. The clerk told me that a customer actually started crying when she said that she could not sell him a DVD version of the game.

The special features of the SE edition are cool, the free headphones and the spiffy metal case. The thing is, I would have gone for this edition over the other just to get it all on one DVD instead of 6 CD's. I hope the SE edition sells rings around the regular edition so that other game companies will start putting multi disc games on DVD.

AS for the game itself, what can I say, it rocks. I don;t think it is a surprise that this game is good. The new levels are astounding and I am just loving Onslaught. The funniest thing about the game is when I first went into the settings I maxed out all the graphic options. When I maxed the last option the Male Announcer vioce came on and yelled out "Holy Shit!". I thought that was a cool touch.

Maybe she misinterpreted his request for what he thought was a novel way of asking her out for a date.

Seriously though... this loser can wait two days and go get one of the oodles of Special Edition copies at BB or Fry's.

Hah, yeah, UT2003 did that as well, pretty fun-nay.

Looks like a lot of folks are getting this game that have never played ut2k3....hmmmmmmmm

I'm going to pick up my copy in 25 minutes. Babbage's has one on hold for me (I didnt pre-order).

WOOT

People I know are getting it for Assault or Onslaught, both of which 2k3 never had. They consider the rest of the game as a nice freebee.

DVD-ROM pwns! So much easier to mount the game as a 4gig image file with Alcohol than have to deal with 6 CD's and the installation would take forever. I put my DVD right back in the case after I ripped the image file and that is where it is going to stay. Highly recommend doing that.

I got Holy Shit settings as well.

Edit: for some reason, probably secure rom, my image file wont work when I click play so I guess I will have to use the DVD.

I plaed UT2k3 a little but not a whole bunch, i played the demo of this one though and decided that this game is worth 29.99. So when fry's gets it in i think on wednesday, i think i will go ahead and pick it up. I like a lot of the new features, adds a lot more replay value to the game.

He could have used a line like this, "Hey baby. I see that you're checking out my Special Edition." Then again, he could have used lines like these:
  • "Why don't you come to my place and show me a real head shot."
  • "Unreal? Hey, I'll show YOU something unreal..."
  • "So exactly what kind of 'tutorials' do they have on this DVD?"
  • "I've been known to respawn several times a night."
  • "I plan on camping here until you go out with me."
  • "I'd love to wallhack your apartment."
  • "Damn baby. You've got so many polygons that it makes my entire system get hot."
  • "Has anyone ever told you that you've got fantastic antialiasing?"
  • "Know what would make a good recipe? A cup of you, a cup of me. Add boiling water. Stir. Serve HOT!
So the last one isn't game related, but cheesy enough to be used.

I don't think it was a misunderstanding. She told me that when she told him that she could sell him the CD version that is when he started crying and said that it just wasn't the same.

I had my six year old daughter with me when I went to get UT2004 (snow day in Columbus, OH) and she behaved better when I told her she couldn't get Pokemon Colessium because it wasn't out yet. she just shrugged it off.

i am getting it exactly for that reason.
you nailed it.

i played both assault and onslaught in the demo, all the deathmatch stuff is not that important to me. i love team multiplayer with objectives, and this is perfect.

Hope you didn't sit there and think up all those lines. :D

Think of 'em? Heck, I've used them... to no success. But it's got to work sometime! :p

I just got mine too. I'm so glad it's the DVD and not the CDs.. OMG, 6 CDs? The bonus DVD ain't too great, in my opinion, but whatcha gonna do? The first DVD makes up for it. :D

I got stuck with the 6cd version :( But I really dont care, ima just daemon the play disc and have a blast. On cd 3 right now :)

Check the order status page, they didn't email either but according to the order status page it shipped w/ tracking number, and best of all according to bank of america they haven't charged me yet :)

What kind of performance are you guys getting? For me, not only does the map take an inordinate amount of time to load, but right after the map loads, my framerates drop to a few FPS and stay that way for a minute or so while the game finishes to load. My specs are below in my sig, (3200+, 9800p 128mb, A7N8X and 512MB corsair), and I'm wondering what kind of upgrades would help load performance. More RAM? A couple WD Raptors?

Yea, I realized that a few minutes after I posted. I was going edit it and say I bitched too soon, but then I got sidetracked.

I don't know hwo system intensive UT2k4 is, but on the rig I have it runs at about 40fps the entire time (granted at 800x600[but hey, its a FX5200]) and load times are fine. So I'd start out with the RAM.

I'm basing this completely off the demo by the way.

Well, the wierd thing is, the demo runs/loads awesome on my system, but the final game is kinda hairy.

i heard someone say on the atari forums that it puts preload skins on by default and that can increase load times

yeah i just got mine just now from a local gamestop and i was lucky enough to get one from the back room :)

I bought it earlier today, and played for about two hours. With 512 megs of ram, on 'holy shit' settings, with my 9800, deathmatches ran great. Large onslaught maps were a little 'hairy' at the start.

Then my newegg shipment got here, a gig of ram. Popped it in, and there is a noticeable improvement in level load times and the first few seconds of play. Smooth sailing.

So for Ikari (I have a very similar system to you, 9800/2100xp)...get some more RAM. The demo ran smooth because it had textures half the size of the real game.

Dude my performance collapsed. Ignore the box system requirements they dont mean shit. God I have a 2500+, pc3200 512MB, 9700 Pro and the game went to hell on my computer. The demo ran like a charm but wow this game is awful on load times and heavy battle scenes  They better patch this shit quick, or figure out what the hell is goin on. Every other game runs great on my PC....

Sounds to me that you have to tune your settings down a bit.

Getting mine tomorrow hopefully, I'll let you know how it REALLY is once I get it.

Excessive Invasion was awsome in UT2k3, I need to test it out for 2k4. ;)

"and I'm wondering what kind of upgrades would help load performance. More RAM?"

It seems like 512 isnt enough to run the game perfectly at full settings. I got to try 2K4 with both a gig and 512 ram today, the difference is noticeable. Looking at how much ram the game was using (samurizer graph), it was around 800 megs.

Um no, dont you think I messed with that before making that statement

if you look here apparently there are a lot of problems with the release. Some peeps cant even get the game to install off the DVD version. And then others just get the load screens and thats it...

a word to those wanting to know if the DVD version works as a image (like alcohol one) it doesn't ...the game and detect the disc as a image file and even tells you ..you can use image to play the game (fuckers) .. too bad cause i really prefer images to large discs anyday :(

I found that out the hard way. I installed off of the image file but it wouldn't play off of it.

ya i really havent gotten into the ut series but am going to this year... 2004 is the year of ut OWNAGE! actually i play unreal championship on xbox with my friends a lot but that doesnt compare to pc at all

Yeah, apparently there're memory issues... like 800MB memory usage and 700MB page files. I think the beginning and periodical slowdowns are because the system's paging so much.

The little things like that really make UT great. I also like the "Pancake!" and "Vehicular Manslaughter!" sounds during the game. I think it would be cool if nearby players could hear that as well.
