i just got some artic silver 5, help please

do i have to clean my old thermal paste off my cpu and heatsink before i use the artic silver? i have a P4, and the old thermal paste is some generic radioshack stuff.

yes, you do. Use isopropyl alcohol (of high purity) or acetone.

i found some "goof off" . is that good? it was listed on articsilver.com

It'll be fine, but don't use too much (i.e. keep it off your mobo), and make sure you wipe everything down and dry it before applying the AS5.

Wipe off the old paste with a cloth or paper towel, then clean the cpu and heatink with qtips soaked with rubbung alcohol.

yes, the goof off will work, but that stuff is sick. Wipe it afterwards with some good isopropyl alcohol, IIRC the goof off is oil based (and i woudln't be surprised by it's consistency...) so you want to get as much of the oils off as possible before the thermal paste...
