My SATA is driving me nuts.

I have an Asus SK8N motherboard.

I have a raptor with my os on it.
My master IDE has my DVD rom
My 2ndary IDE has 2x 200gb hard drives with data only on it.

Everything was fine.
Today I disconnected one of the ide drives, and connected an old hard drive in order to format it.

Well nothing booted right.

So I disconnected the old hard drive, and put back the previous ide cable with the 2 drives on it.

Now when I boot, the computer doesn't see the SATA drive.
I tried booting with only the SATA, I tried booting in every possible combination.

There is no setting in the bios to boot to SATA.

I tried resetting the bios.

I booted to an XP cd, installed the SATA drivers, then rebooted. Nothing.
I booted to an XP cd, installed the SATA drivers, and tried reinstalling windows. Doesn't find the hard drive.

I tried 4 different SATA cables.
I know the drive is getting power because I feel it.


I have no fucking clue what to do. I hate this fucking board.
 
have you tried "boot from SCSI"?

that is what always made my sata boot on my asus a7n8x

it could be that your drive just took a shit, you know
 
there is no option to boot from scsi.

Even when the drive worked, there was no evidence of it in the bios.
 
got any other boards to test the drive on? maybe a bios flash?

is the sata controller turned on? boards that old didnt say anything in teh bios... they had a seperate controller for sata, my a7n8x has a jumper to turn the controller on or off, so maybe check that out...
 
Try turning on RAID in your bios. Then, in your boot screen there will be a key combo to allow you to enter the RAID BIOS. Add the drive as a single drive. Exit that and again in the boot screen look for a key (like F11) which allows you to choose the drive from which you want to boot. Also make sure you have the correct drive choosen for boot in your BIOS. Your motherboard owners manual should have the proper key combos listed.

Since you pulled some drives you might have to reset the PATA jumpers to master and master with slave. Very often Cable Select won't work after you pull a drive in a working system.

Have you verified that the drive is good? Try it in another system if you can and/or run manufacturer diagnostics on it. Also, your BIOS may have detected an active partition with a master boot record when you put in the old drive, and that may explain your boot sequence woes. Verify that the SATA drive is first in the boot sequence even with the older drive installed.
 
even when the SATA drive worked, you wouldn't even notice it in the bios as my bios only listed my floppy, dvd, and the pata drives. It never listed the SATA drive as a bootable drive.

It seems like there is a seperate bios for the SATA.

I set it to raid, and rebooted. It now scans for ide drives instead of SATA. It brings me to the familar screen saying it could not find an operating system or something to boot off of. The motherboard book says I should press control F to get into the Raid bios but that doesn't work.
 
had a similar problem with my abit board, reset the CMOS and increase the boot priority of the SATA controller in the BIOS. Somehow the booting from the SATA was locked out, i reset the CMOS and applied the same BIOS settings and it booted fine.
 
I already reset the cmos, and I do not see anywhere where I can change the boot priority to SATA. Like I said, even when the drive worked fine, the Bios didn't even see it.
 
do you have any way to verify that the drive just isnt dead? drives do die randomly sometimes...
 
i just got a DOA maxtor drive from newegg. it spins up fine, but no BIOS will recognize it.

got any buddies with an SATA connection?
 
Hrmmm My SATA Drives were always easier to get working that my PATA drives.

Do you have both power cords plugged into the raptor? One from the Special SATA connection and one to the accual hard drive?
 
WHen I got my first raptor i felt like an idiot because I didnt know I needed to hook up 2 power things to it... I was pissed that it was broke and i hated the new tech cuz it didnt work when really it was my own fault... Please excuse the crude drawing for I am in Iraq with a shitty dell laptop and MS Paint :(

uh.... you arent supposed to use two molex's people... that can damage the drive...

the reason for hte new connector was hotswapability...

The only reason I brought this up was because I remember my Brand new awesome raptor not working. Me so pissed off ready to go right to the store and return it... then i was like what the hell is this extra plug thing...? plugged it into the other power and bam... it worked... I almost had a heart attack it was something so simple

have you tried it with only the molex? only the SATA power? maybe your converter is bad or something.
 
The Raptor is the only Hard drive I know to use both.... FOr me I still have to...

Its Bridged PATA to SATA.

The SATA bus needs to be powered as well as the HDD

I have 2 Raptors in Raid... all for power slots need to be plugged in for it to work for me period.

P4C @ 3.2, 1GB DDR433, Abit IC7, PCP&C 510 SLI
Nothing bad about my computer
 
the sata bus has nothing to do with that drive, and it should get sufficent power from either or, i have never heard of anyone having to use both connections just to get their drive to work.
 
Maybe Because I have 2 of the Original 36GB ones? I have had them operating like this in Raid 0 since October 2003

Do not use both power connectors, use one or the other, using both could cause damage to drive.
 
This is what I found on the matter.... when I just searched. I dont know weather you would need to plug both in or not... weather its good or bad, but I know I have to for whatever reason otherwise it wont show up like its not plugged in....

Well then dont do it I guess...

I just am amazed I have to... dissapointed in fact... :(

Why do they have both their then?
 
First, you shouldn't have to turn the RAID function on since you are only connecting 1 SATA drive(correct me if I'm wrong).
Second, DO NOT connect both power(molex) connectors. All you need is the SATA cable AND one or the other molex connections.
Third, have you re-checked your connections? While removing the other drive, you may have pulled the SATA cable loose. You say you can tell it's getting power, but are you sure the SATA cable is connected right? It sounds dumb, but I've been caught like that before(a loose cable). You say it was working fine before you swapped drives so I don't see why all of a sudden it would be bad.
Finally, if all else fails and your board has another SATA connection, try that.

When you reset your CMOS, you should unplug the computer and turn off the power supply. Then pop the battery out and pull the jumper. If you left it plugged in, the CMOS won't reset. Just a suggestion. I would try to reset it again (you are also supposed to wait 30 seconds to a minute when doing this), it was my problem when installing my SATA drives after using IDE for a while. Good luck.

There is another way to reset the CMOS. I had to do it this way because neither changing the jumper nor pulling the battery worked. Actually find the CMOS chip, pull it out(be very careful not to bend any pins), wait about 30 seconds, replace the chip and boot up. If none of the other two reset suggestions work, this one should. It was the only way that worked on my computer.
 
I turned off the power on the power supply.
Pressed the power button to drain it.
Removed CMOS battery for a half hour while I ate dinner.
Came back, put the battery in.
Booted, tried installing Windows, Windows couldn't find the hard drive. And yes, I pressed F6 and installed the SATA driver off of the floppy.

I now notice that the drive is not making any noise when I power it on, but it does get hot on the bottom ribbon cable. I don't think it is spinning.
 
Smells like RMA time. Run manufacturer diagnostics on the drive to be sure, and sned it back. Not worth any more of your time/any more downtime.

if hte BIOS and windows cant see it and its not spinning, i dont think diagnostics are gonna find it :p
