I plained on upgrading my i5-750 to a 860 today. Well my girlfriends-friends husband just ugraded to a i7-980/ 2 gtx-480's and 3 intel 160 gig ssd's in raid-0. didnt know the guy till today. the woman folk got to talking about pet peaves. computer widows they call themselves. one told the other how he is always going to micro-center. really mine too spends all his extra cash on computer crap. found out he also fold's was hoping i found a fellow hocper but he's a evga guy. 10 minutes after meeting this guy he hands me a i7-920. Chrismas in april !! Soo a Asus P6T- bfg 8400gs and a Seagate 500 gig 7200 hard drive. Im off to building !!!

Congrats!! Get that thing folding -bigadv!!

Congrats! I guess you are probably looking at a new motherboard too then? Then you may need new ram?

I am curious to see what kind of overclocks you will get. Micro Center really is the hardware store for us computer stores. For some reason, I usually end up going there once every 2 weeks or so and end up buying something I didn't need. If only their gaming section was more up to date, i'd be happier(they seldom have new releases).

Sounds like you need to work on converting this guy...

yes indeed ! From talking with him he might need a little help in the overclocking tuning department. Hell ill wash his dishes and cut his grass to if he wants. :)

I'm rooting for amdgamer to hit higher clocks too! A case with more airflow and a bad ass cooler should allow some nice clocks. Worked for me!

my msi GD-65 doesnt read 3 sticks of ram. its either 2 or 4 sticks so im stuck with 2 sticks left for the 920

See if you can't work on him to cover over to team 33.

He is already giving you hardware :)

Maybe you can borg his machine while he is distracted and away from his computer?

For someone who is a dedicated folder, they probably don't pay that close attention and maybe you can run the configonly switch and switch his team to #33? That is of course if he has a sense of humor as different people react differently to these types of jokes.

he's more of a gamer. folds some and likes playing with expensive fast as hell parts.

It just finnished it's first smp client. only running 3.2 on stock cooler 160X20 3:22 fram times on a 6021. its sitting in my old koolance case. thinking of zip tying the water block to it and see it it still works. has to better than this friggen stock intel cooler. now i need some antifreez and distilled water

Damn........

I guess you'll still have to work on trying to convert him to our team then since a borg is out of the question now.

I don't know what I have gotten myself into, but I keep thinking of the Borg cube everytime I see an idle computer.

Congrats! Actually sounds similar to my situation. Since upgrading to the 980x I've got a 920 sitting on the desk doing nothing. Was planing to put it back in this rig when I do the new build next month but I may just sell it for cheap or give it away since they don't sell for much anyway and put something better in the husk of the sig rig.

Not sure what co/c1 means as fare as a good chip or not but working good soo fare.

C0/C1 means the chip you have is the older revision of the 920. In practice, it really doesn't make a difference.

That looks like a very high voltage for the clock speed, will it run at 3.7 at any lower voltage? Cause it's folding 24/7 changes in volts save you power and money over time.

thought 1.352 was good?

Forgive the newb question, but how can the WB guarantee a tight fit with a new processor? Aren't they made to fit a certain processor family or can they be fitted to most any processor?

If you look closely, you can see that he rigged up his own mounting system with some wire ;).

Don't they still sell for $150-200-ish? Well given your sig rig, 150-200 seems like very little.

Im using this water block till i get a new one. its on there tight. the asus pt6 has mounting for 775. koolance sells a mounting kit for 775 and this block. If you look close you can see funk in the water block. soo fare i have used bleach/water and alcohol/water to clean it.

Im not sure how much better newer water blocks are but im hoping they are much better.

this is where ill be keeping it for now. the points are low from all the rebooting and playing with it.

Man, those temps are terrible, you'd be better off with a decent air cooler rather then that koolance system.

That's what I was thinking. People are Ocing the 920s with HSFs at 4Ghz+.

obligatory posts:

BAKE IT!

Nobody pays me in i7's (gum)

*edit*
After looking at your pictures of the rig and the temp, I think my first obligatory post might happen.

Your temps are WAY to high, and even though those are made to handle up to 200F temp wise, I wouldnt try to test that statement! I hope your new WB helps out, cause that is just to high a number bro.
But not bad for a freebie.

Im actually gonna agree with that statement about the air cooling, but if you can, ditch the koolance, and switch to the H50 if you wanna stay with water, cause the H50 is beast with temps.

Are you people not paying attention? as i have said this thing needs work. it was sitting in a corner full of mold and scum. for the shape its in its doing way better than what i expected. once the water block and pump have been changed there wont be a air cooler that will touch it. the H50's radiator isnt even close to the size this thing has. the radiator is rated for 420 watts. http://www.koolance.com/water-cooling/product_info.php?product_id=71 its the block and pump that cant hang. of course i like the challenge of somebody telling me something wont work. :p

I hear ya, lehmann. It's all cool. I was just speculating aloud when I saw ND40oz' post. If the upgrades are going to be more cost effective than purchasing a high performance HSF, then definitely stay with the Koolance. I realize that it has good potential.
