I have followed the video card market ever since I bought my voodoo 2, but I have to say I am finished trying to keep on top of new technology. A guy used to be able to look at the model of a card a know what he's getting, now every model number goes through multiple generations with X, XT, Ultra etc... To make it even funner, you throw the word "pro" in there occassionally, and back-date the card number to really f with people (9700, 9600, 9800, 9500...)...

i'm due for a new card soon, i don't even want to think about it. I wonder what would happen if Windows Longhorn came out next year and was called windows 99 or Windows MEX... people would lose it... WHY GOD WHY!?!?

Your right but you have to take in account that each is geared towards a different user at different price points. The hardest part for you should be trying to figure out which one you are or better yet which one you can afford. That said I think ATI is using trickery with its high-end cards (XT & PE) and releasing to many also. I really dont know why there flooding the market with so many different names and the same price sometimes. I really have to commend Nvidia because I think there marketing is much better and they dont make a user feel like there buying crap when they go for there low-end cards. Example; Say you got a 6600 and you still think its quality, on the other hand if you get a X300 you feel like you just got shit. ATI really has to fix that up IMO.

Incredible when you think about it. They are all based on the same core in a sense, just with extra features bundled in. Looks like they had a good design to extend it so long.
 
It's not too hard to "stay in touch" with the current market... you don't have to know each and every tid bit about all the cards... just go to Tom's and Sharky and pricewatch from time to time and stay on one of these boards... and as always, choose your own level of involvement. :)
 
I can list the cards myself, the question is performance doesn't follow the numbers. As I recall, the 9500 Pro is better than the 9600. What really confuses me is when they jumped to the X designation, does the X300 beat the 9800 Pro. I'm pretty sure it doesn't. I don't suppose someone has a list such as this sorted by raw performance?

edit: unless this is in fact sorted by performance already, in which case ignore the ramblings of a guy that just gave blood, it just looks like they're in numerical

Its a damned joke.

The entire video card industry is a joke right now...incredibly overpriced cards with incomplete feature sets, no naming standards (intentionally confusing), hardware shipping with incomplete drivers, game-specific hardware and drivers, etc...

The whole thing is a joke. I will buy the mid-level next generation ATI card. nVidia will never get my money again.

I've got nothing against ATI but be fair. Both Nvidia and ATI have pulled the same low blows. Picking the more ethical of the two is a bit like trying to vote in the average US election. All the people I've seen only prefer one because the other one pissed em' off, not because they actually like their favored company.

Actually, if you want to get down to game specific hardware, Nvidia is not at fault in any way for DOOM. John Carmac is one of the few people keeping OpenGL alive in the gaming world and he should be commended for that. Without OpenGL PC gaming would be come a Windows only thing and there'd be no competition which would mean higher prices for you!

Unless of course you like the thought of Microsoft monopolizing the gaming world the way they have their OS. :p

I wasn't ragging on either more than the other...ATI's latest and greatest dont' have PS 3.0...and for a 500 dollar card, I expect everything available in my card.

Well, in all honesty ATi has 2.0b which has more instructions than just 2.0, but the marketing is better for nVidia to have 3.0. Of course ATi people will say it's useless, but I see it getting used in SLi configurations where two Ultras could put those extra features to use.
