OK, so as I was rummaging through a bin of hella-old stuff, I came across this HS.. I have no idea what it's from except I know it's from a computer from a looooong way back that my dad had at one point.. I was thinking maybe swapping it with the one already on my VC (C3D 9600xt 128mb) and was wondering if It will be better or not..

I'd have to do some modding to the HS to get it to fit, but I could get it on.. Do you think I'll have to strip the anno off the contact area and maybe lap it? It seems smoother than the hs already on my vc, but it has ano on it..

Here are some pics..

The blue HS is probably 1.5x as wide as the stock. although the pics make it look a bit bigger..

Oh, and if you could help me identify what the HS came from that'd be quite awesome..

wow.. thats a interesting heat sink.. its either aluminum or steel..... hack up a 1u heat sink or do what my friend did and take a crappy all copper socket A heat sink(mine in fact) and retrofit.. his radeon has a wicked sick temp now

It's definetley aluminum.. You don't think the big size difference of the sink will make a difference? The only other heatsink I have available to use would be my stock p4 3.0c HS but that would take some serious hacking to get it to clear the capacitors. The weight might even screw up the card if i used that..

I might be able to rig up a 80mm fan onto this bigger HS too.. Well, I'm gonna start making this HS fit, but I'm not gonna slap it on just yet..

Give me more opinions guys..

just email me them:

the links dont work for me either lol

It's from an old Dell optiplex gn/gs.
Original pentium 100 - 233 mhz.
Clamshell design.

The work pretty well, what's nice is that you can fit a slim 60 or 80 mm fan between the posts and get push and pull cooling.

Hard to say whether it will work better or not. I can't tell from the pics but does it have a large enough base to fit on the core of the 9600? If so I think it would probably work pretty well assuming you could get a fan on it. If you put a slim 80mm and do a push pull odds are you will get some decent temps. It's worth a shot if you're bored this weekend. :D

Well I jimmy-rigged the thing on there and it sits pretty stable.. I'm not running it on there yet cause I still gotta clean it up and stuff.. I got pics and I'll post them real quick.

And mobiux, you know your shit.

if i were you, id hack off the top layer of that heatsink so youll have some more room and youd still have a decent heatsink

I used to have an old computer with that heatsink. It was a Dell desktop, running a Pentium 166. Had the same exact passive heatsink except it was just bare metal, not painted blue. Nice find.

fact is, that old pure aluminum hs isnt nearly as good as a copper/alum based heatsink. I wouldnt use it

I don't use the other slots, so the size isn't an issue. And the stock HS isn't copper/aluminum, it's just a tiny piece of aluminum. Two fins off thos blue one is probably more material than the entire stock HS.

If I use this, you guys think the anno on the contact area is going to do anything, or should I strip that?

i wasnt saying it wouldnt be a improvement.. anythign would be better then what sis puts on there video card chipsets lol
you just need to make sure it covers the core and by all means lapp it.... im just saying that it was quite a bit easy to take a all copper socket a heat sink cut off the socket housing pull out the copper and drill holes in it.. thats all that it involved... i was consitering doing it to my fx 5950 for the longest time.. but i am glad i got the zalman instead

my friend put it on a radeon so there is no clearance problems with it.. a wee bit heavy tho but nothing to worry about

Yea, covers the core by a long shot.. I could easily fit 10 cores on it.. lol..

Gonna lap it tonight and possibly have it running by tomorrow.. I gotta get started on my school work though.. Been putting off 6 classes for 2 weeks..

I have one exactly like that, expect it's blue and a little longer. I've been tempted to put it on an old graphics card, it would look sooo cool.

That picture had me thinking, could you get your stock intel fan to blow the other way? It would help cool the passive heatsink on your video card. Also, how do you have that thing mounted (The intel fan)?

Hmm, nice leach of the images through anonymizer. That would be why they take forever to load

Atleast they do ;)

Anyway, I actually still have two free pci slots under that HS..

THe Intel fan fits perfectly into the little bars that go across the PCI slots on the rear, and the platic snap things hold it in place. I used 1 ziptie to keep it from being bumped off if I'm moving it around..

I also have 2 fans on the bottom of the front of my case pulling air in, and the intel fan pushes it out so there's a good current flowing in there..

Sadly, the C3D 9600 doesn't have a temp diode, but my CPU dropped 1C idle (??) and hte chips are also just barely warm to the touch; where as before you couldn't hold your finger there for very long. But, after doing some d3 (just for benching.. not for fun ;) ) My FPS raised an average of about 9 FPS.. And no anomalies or artifacts..

Normally after some gaming and letting the card bake a bit, when i return to windows I get some pretty blue pixel artifacts - not anymore. I was also never able to OC the card because it would over heat so easily. I believe with this thing I just might be able to. But for now I have to take a break from this computer and I'll try it out tomorrow.

And it just looks friggin cool with this huge HS at the bottom of my case.. It was just an empty hole before :D
