I have a visiontek 4850 and i had been experiencing the same problem alot of people have with the card shutting of and going to a black screen and the driver failing. This was due to the card overheating well specifically the VRM's well this what i did. Instead of buying another cooler all i did was just take apart the stock cooler and removed all the junk from the factory. I think the problem is that they put theses thick adhesive pads for the rams and more importantly the vrm's. The ones for the Vrm;s like sufficates them and must reduce the airflow. Well anyways i removed all of that crap and cleaned off the GPU and put on some AS5. Now my card at 45% fan speed doesn't get any more hotter than 72c ive seen and more importantly its not shutting off

So i recommend doing this before buying aftermarket coolers.
its really easy to do and i think it makes a big difference
 
Does this void the warranty by any chance? I got the gigabyte version and it has a 3 year warranty which i don't wanna lose.

i bought my visiontek at bestbuy iam still in the return policy
if it dies suddenly but so far it runs better
i want to stress test it more though see how high i can get the temps
 
I used some generic white paste on my water block for my video card and I was hitting 46C under full load. It also would not over clock for crap which I thought was odd because 46C is not hot under full load by any means. I put on some AS5 after finding my tube of it and my load temps went from 46C to 35C and idle went from 35C to 29C. I have my computer parked right in front of my AC unit with the rear fans sucking in and blowing all the air out the front through the radiator. Long story short, the cheap white stuff is exactly that. These cards are VERY touchy when it comes to heat it seems. I can now run 800/1100 and probably go even higher. Before I couldn't go above stock without games getting a black screen and the driver failed message.

AS is a sticky gooey mess to work with and is electrically conductive. You make a mess and get paste between electrical traces and you run the risk of shorting the video card. I hate the stuff. I have paste from Coolermaster that I like a lot better to work with and is not electrically conductive. AS doesn't even apply smoothly because it is too thick and gooey. Maybe it cools 1c better than Coolermanster paste but that isn't worth the hassle of using it, or the extra cost.

no need to remove the stock cooler, just adjust the fan in the CCC create a profile and do the xml fix to manually adjust the fan speed, I did this and my card idles at 44C to 47C.

but re setting the stock cooler with as5 made a big difference
i have my fan on 45% and AS5 now my card doesn't shutoff and go to a black screen
and temps are maintained.
i put AS5 on everything i put it on the core, ram and vrm's
this stuff is awesome. I also think the thermal pads for the vrm's and heatsink suck and reduce airflow.
 
Just installed my 4850. I've been experiencing the blank screen problem as well. I've finally managed to boot to windows and have reduced the DVI frequency. I may just have to try this method later if I experience anymore problems.

it is not recommended to put artic silver on memory and vrm's you are likely to short your card out doing that
 
do not put as5 on your vid card...if you get it on the board it can short it and ruin your card. use ceramique.

Only if you are either sloppy and get it on the traces/pins while applying it or if you put too much and it oozes out onto the traces/pins after you reinstall your HSF. Personally, I use AS ceramique just to be safe, but there's nothing wrong with using AS5 either.


Just be careful with it.
