Ok guys, ive had enough fun with my 9600pro but i think its time to upgrade.

but now the market has been saturated with excelent cards on the market.i think my criteria chould be that i should get a card with no less than 8 pipelines and 128meg ram onboard and costing no more than £180.(yes im in the UK)

my choices are as follows:

1)Nvidia based geforce 6800nu 128 meg at £179

2) Ati based 9800pro 128 meg at £125

3)Ati based 9800pro 256 meg with R360 core with bios flash to make it a 9800xt at vairous rates.

or my last choice would be a Ati 9500 no-pro with the L-shaped memory and then softmod it to a 9700 pro at ebay prices.

or the final choice would be to wait for agp versions of the geforce 6600gt and the Ati x700xt by the end of the year.

my rig is as follows:
Asus A7n8x dlx rev.2
Athlon xp 2500+ @ 3200+
Geil Value 1gig of DDR3200
Sapphire 9600 pro 128 meg
Antec Truepower 480w psu
Maxtor 120gig pata to sata
Maxtor 80gig pata to sata
Nec 2500a to 2510a dvd writer
Pioneer dvd rom
Antec Lanboy case

the main reason i want to change is that simply i know in the future that the games i want to play will not be taking full advantage of the hadware i have and also this card is crippled in a way(4 pipelines and 128 bit bus).i dont have tons of cash avail but i know that if i get a Ati card that i would be able to use my Artic vga silencer on the current generation of 9800 gpu's.

i dont want to spend like mad on a card coz i only play games at 1024x768 with 2xAA and 4xAF so it's not demamding much.

thanks guys.

6800 will win every benchmark when its tested against anything but the x800 series of cards. If you want a slower card snag the 9800 though :)

Of those choices, it goes something like this:

6800nu>6600 GT>>9800 XT>9800 Pro>everything else

XFX GeForce 6800 Extreme Gamers Edition 128MB DDR TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail
ive heard of xfx before but i dont know how good quality their proucts are??

i seen their mobo's and cheeper graphics cards but im still not sure where this card stands in in performance compared to the huge mountain of 6800 non ultra cards??

XFX are a great company - noted for haveing graphics cards overclocked out_of_the_box.

That's a good offer for the 6800 - probably worth going for. I think that ebuyer.co.uk are doing the same offer on that card.

As for video card choice - I'd say definitely go with the 6800 over the 9800 series.

Not sure what your options are in the UK, but at ATI.com you can do the trade-up program to get $50 off. It says "charges trade-in price + credit" yet when you add to basket, it's only $199. So with a $50 credit, that's $150. There's also a coupon code on Hardocp.com for 10% off, taking your total to $130 for a Retail Radeon 9800 Pro!
