So I came across this xeon, heres a pic

Basically, I want to know what I can do with it. All the socket 604 boards I find are really expensive and have two cpu sockets, can these boards run with only 1 cpu? I've also seen some boards that take DDR1 and others that take DDR2, can the cpu take either of those?

and finally, how much do you think i could get for it on the forum  , if its too ridiculous to build a rig out of it i'll just sell it, but if i can make a nice system out of it with little hassle im all over it.

thanks for your time

Haha. Sorry, that's pretty damn funny. But I'd like to know where you found that too...

Xeons are nice but really shine if you want a system capable of PCI-X support or SMP. At that point they get pretty pricy, especially for a desktop user. So unless you "come across" some SCSI harddrives, it'd be better to try selling the chip and building a P4 machine instead. You could probably get enough from the Xeon for a P4 and half the cost of the board.

I came across it at work :) , we broker electronic components and every now and then something like this makes it in the warehouse, its been sitting out of sight for months, so I aquired it :)

I think i've determined that this can be ran by itself but froogle wont show me a mobo for less than $200 :( and ebay is useless

edit, coming across this is nice, but I wish I was the guy who came across the 3800 X2 :p

That is a Nacona Xeon. Essentially a Prescott core. However, that processor supports EM64T and can be used in 1 way or two way systems. That's a 3.4GHz processor. You should be able to sell it for a good amount of cash. Of course, not near what they cost new.

Unfortunately for motherboards, you'll need to get ECC Registered ram, an EPS12V power supply and a motherboard that supports the Nacona Xeon. Which will only be PCI-Express motherboards BTW. You could use it. Xeon's have a coolness factor to them. Unfortunately it will cost quite a bit of money to use it for yourself.

what speed is the xeon? You could probably sell it for a fair amount of money, depending on speed, cache etc. On the processor there's probably some info you can google, or look up on intel.com

It is:

Xeon DP (Dual Processor capable for 2-way systems) (Nacona Core)
Socket 604
3.4GHz
1MB Level 2 Cache
800MHz FSB
EM64T enabled
It also contains the XD bit.

Oh lol, I didn't bother enlarging the pic...so I couldn't read the code. haha..dang, that's $435 new on newegg...
