So today i decided i can't push it off any longer, Watch Dogs is waiting for me. My computer is at a stand still after my 6 month old ocz stealthxstream quietly went out on me, no smell nor sound. After opening it i still havent found why. I later on learned that it was a warranty returned unit so i wasn't really so bummed out anymore. In my search i had it narrowed down to these particular units..........

Newegg Corsair CX500 $30ar

Tiger Direct Corsair TX650 $20ar

I bought the TX650 because it was cheaper and its the better line of the two and that's about all. I like newegg better and really wanted to break the bank for $10 extra. plus the tx650 is refurbished unit.

The part of it being refurbished was my only worry and it will be until it goes out. So I need some peace of mind on the positive side of buying a refurbished psu since my ocz was a warranty return and they mostly send back a refurbished unit. Was does TD call "refurbished"?
 
Did you read the reviews on that TX650 refurb ? Sounds like you might need a second one soon.
 
Out of all the components in a PC, the PSU is the one I would be the most careful about. I'm leery of low priced power supplies... but those 2 you are talking about are essentially free after the rebate, and the reason they have a rebate is to get you to commit to keeping the item quickly before something goes wrong with it.

I'm not suggesting that you are looking at a potential fire hazard, but simply that you are "throwing good money after bad", as my old man would have said. That is, you are needing to replace your PSU prematurely (presumably because it was refurbished and of low quality to start) and now you are "patching" this problem up with the cheapest possible replacement you could find. I've had cheap Antec PSUs last me for years, but some of them gave up quick. I have a Seasonic that I am so confident in I removed the "Void Warranty" sticker because it was unsightly. That "peace of mind" you are seeking? It's worth the price and it comes with doing careful research on which are the most reliable whatevers you are after and then being willing and able to plunk down the moola for that reliability and quality.

I'm in no way suggesting that being short on cash isn't a good reason to buy a low-cost power supply, but refurb is a bad idea when you are talking about something you don't have a backup for, and that will render your system useless if it fails: refurb soundcard? go for it. refurb monitor, you have an old one in case? go for it. refurb PSU: alarm bells are ringing.

Exactly that!!
I would also have no problem to buy refurbished every piece of PC hardware except the PSU!!
From the proper function of your PSU depends the proper function of your entire system so i wouldn't recommend it to you ;)
 
i love the insights im getting :) exactly what my fears are......but Bluesun311 your talking about what your ol' man always said.......well my ol' man told me "its probably a store return, you see TD can't sell them labeled as 'new' so they just put refurbished as a lable" my dad is just an older version of me he was a pc guru before the internet was mainstream, i give him respect for that :)

Hence the need to look at the TD reviews. 9 reviews since Dec 2013, all but 2 of those are saying the refurb psu had failed on them or was shipped out dead.
 
its seems like i made a mistake. i expect a scenario like this coming forth: it will arrive, dead or will be dead within a few weeks send it back to TD get a refund. so i have another question, does td take them back without upc since i will probably have it sent out for rebate?
also i want to look at the bright side here. ok im sure more than 9 people have bought it since dec 2013 naturally if one fails people would make it a point to leave a review stating such. people who are satisfied wont really make much fuss in leaving a review, right?

If you send off for the rebate you are going to be SOL on a return (warranty being your only recourse). If it was me, I'd realize the downsides of this choice and return it unused and get something different. If a power supply goes it can easily take other items with it, motherboards,CPU, video cards, hard drives ...etc

A power supply is one of the last places you want to gamble
