Hello all, any help would be appreciated. I don't know squat about Intel processors which is why I am asking all you experts on the [H]. I need to buy a new mobo and ram for this Intel chip and I don't know what I need. It is a 1.4 ghz p4 256/400 (socket 478?) chip , here is a pic of it.

I would think it should be 266/400, but I checked the chip a couple of times and it is printed 256/400, so this is confusing me. Thanks for the help.
 
256 means 256kb of L2 cache. It's a garbage Willamette, basically. Any 400mhz bus supported motherboard should work. I believe that that thar chip be the slowest P4 in existance, congrats!

A CPU that's beaten by 1.13GHz Pentium 3s.

I would consider getting another processor if you're willing to buy a new board and ram for that POS.
 
i remember those days... it truely was a laughing stock.

i believe intel said... something about not being able to tell in MS Word...

Socket 423, SDRAM or DDR, whatever the board takes. You should be able to pick up the boards used for <$40.

Just FYI, my work computer is a 1.5Ghz Williamette, and it sucks. 256MB of RAM and about 10 programs open for work, and it is not astonishing in speed, but I guess the job gets done. Heck, I'm posting from this computer.

You can get that folding and put it to some good use, anyways. If you don't want it, donate it to the [H]ard folding team.
 
Thanks for the reply guys. It's not my system, the friend I am helping used some sort of mb bios "safeguard" program and now the computer refuses to boot without his password, which of course he can't recall. I tried to flash the bios but this "feature" loads into main mem on startup and of course requires the password to boot from any device.

I have another question, the mainboard it uses now is a ecs p4vmm2 V1.3 which on ecs's website indicates socket 478, I just want to make sure it is indeed a 478 socket instead of 423 as Buckus and a google search indicate it could be. Maybe Ecs had two revisions of the board, one 423 and one 478?
