Ok I am stupid....I was putting together a friends AMD system with the stock HSF on his barton.....no OCing will be done....and i notice that there is a small "dent" in the HS about the size of the head of a tootpick....is this a HUGE problem?....if so what do you suggest?

Thank You

-Greg-

where is it? I take it center of the heatsink, directly atop the processor.

I guess a sharp toothpick?
less than a 1/16 of an inch?
You may try to polish it out with some wet sandpaper and wd40, if its really small toward the center of the CPU, make sure you use good heatsink paste and let it go. If its on the edge of the CPU where the dent cannot be filled with thermal paste... polish away...

Well you could sand the heatsink.

Use some rough grit grade sandpaper then some fine grit paper get the lowest grade you can from the hardware store ( or is that highest? ), Smooth it out with the rough grit untill it is perfectly flat and then make sure you buff out the big scracthes ( the best you can ) with the fine grade sandpaper.

But it shouldn't matter to much at all.

so you say polish it with WD40?....and wet sand paper?....what grit?

im thinking about just being a a cheapo HSF from like compusa for 17bucks...its copper....cuz i dont wanna take the chance of burning the CPU....what do you guys think?

head of a toothpick, thats pretty small.

Just get some good thermal compound on it and it may run a few degrees warmer but not life or death in any way.

if it isnt sharp to the touch and is indented it should pose no problem. Where is it though? Touching the core?

some of you suggested to buff it out.....how would you go about doing this?

i think im just gonna "buff it out" and put some thermal compound on it.

I made my Athlon 64 bit heatsink out of wood. Works great and keeps all the heat at the processor level.. The heat sink runs cool.

LOL;) ;) ;)

The Barton coolers with the copper slug in them have a small demple in the copper slug. Dont ask me why but all of my 2500+ have had them. I would venture to say it will not effect the performance at all.

Ok, so there is a small indentation on the heatsink, and it is probably close to the edge of the core. I really dont think the processor will be affected terribly by this (maybe a few degrees). If I were you it would still bug me so I would grab some 220 grits sand paper and wet sand the heatsink on a very flat surface (ie glass). Then step up to 400 g, 600g, 800g, 1000g, and if you really want to have it nice and shiny go to 1200g, 1500g and 2000g. It sounds like a lot of work, and it will take you some time, but if you dont want it perfect dont go all the way to the highest grit, just sand it until you think it looks ok.

The easiest thing to do would be to forget about it and use plenty of thermal grease!!!

Hope this helped.

Oh yeah there are some lapping instructions on various sites online so just google it!

ok thanks guy i think ill just get some arctic 3 and slap it on there and hope for the best

In which case it would be better to use water for wet sanding then WD40.

rofl, its not like the WD40 stays on the heatsink. We have this thing called evaporation.

i mean....maybe if he was trying to sand it while the computer was running and he took off the HSF and then sprayed WD40 on it and sprayed some on the die for shits and giggles. Then he might be in trouble.

ok now i have a n00b question....where do i put this thermal grease i have never used it before....on the die on the top of the CPU....or on the HS

you want to put it on the CPU, here's how.

1.) Put a small amount on the CPU Core
2.) get a credit card and spread the grease so it is very thin, you should ALMOST be able to see through it.
3. Put the Heatsink on top.

Putting too much thermal grease will insulate teh processor, leading to higher temperatures, so you want to make sure you ahve a very small amount of it.

yeah thermal paste it - now if it is in the contact area of the cpu core - then you might want to buy new cooler - but dont buy crap from compusa - go look online and get something decent - look at newegg.com 's selection or some cooling/overclock sites -
I bet you can find a decent cooler for less than whatever compusa charges - and if it is that lowest priced one from compusa - forget it- it wont keep up with the heat of a barton...

PICS!!!!!!! I'd love to see how you did that one :) , I've seen a case made out of wood , not a HS though.

No, they've said that that is the wrong way to do it.. NOW we're supposed to put a dab in the middle of the core and let the heatsink spread it out (I don't think it matters, but when i did the credit card thing, my temps always went up 10*C after 2 days, and with the dab thing, they don't). Anyway, about the dent in the heatsink, its not gonna effect anything, don't worry about it.

if you did it that way how would you know if you've got too much that it spreads all over the CPU, or it doesn't cover it at all?

I'm pretty sure it was a joke man...:D

I'd take some to fill in that indendation on the HSF first and wipe clean around it.

Some people here have some VERY stupid suggestions. No offense meant or anything, but your advice is "buy a new heatsink"? What the fuck? That doesn't help anything except your post count.

My friend's SK-6 has the same thing, the little indention on the heatsink. It never made any difference in temperature that I could tell. As for the correct way of applying AS, you're supposed to put a little bit on the heatsink and spread it around with a credit card (I use a toothpick, anything small works) and then put a little splotch of AS on the heatsink. Get a plastic baggy, put your finger in it, and rub the AS around on the heatsink. Most people aren't familiar with the second part, but if you look around on Arctic Silver's website for the proper application manual, they mention it there.

It dropped my temps about 1-2C, so it's not BS.

Actually, I do that....lol. Didn't notice any difference in temp but still do it, dunno why.

obviously the guy is obsessing about it. if he's going to worry about it making poor contact buying a new HS is the way to go. $20 is a small price for peace of mind...
