So I finally decided on a monitor, the Hyundai W240D-PVA, since it was only £30 more than the cheapest height adjustable 24" TN. However I'm having a bit of a problem with it, at any brightness other than 100% it flickers, is this normal for LCD backlights? I'm worried about the effect this would have on my eye sight in the long term, and either way, it annoys me.

I've recorded a video of it on a white background in the dark, its exaggerated alot by the camera but it proves that it's actually there:

100% brightness: http://leehemingway.com/stuff/100.avi
60% brightness: http://leehemingway.com/stuff/60.avi

Do other people's monitors do this at lower brightness settings? does anyone have a monitor that doesn't do this at all?

Thanks

Since CCFL cannot be "dimmed" like incandescent lamps, the effect is achieved by turning them on and off at a very high frequency. Most people don't notice it, as it's typically 120hz upwards; either you are very susceptible, or the inverter has a fault and it's switching at a much lower frequency.

Thanks for the info philjohn. I've just been testing my brothers 17" LCD and the 32" LCD TV downstairs at various brightness levels by looking through the camera again. It didn't pick up any flicker whatsoever on either of them so I think it must be that the inverter is faulty.

In that case I think I'll send it back, haven't decided whether it'll be for replacement or refund yet.
