Hyperthreading...

Just built a LGA775 Computer, and while toying around with it, I noticed I couldn't play any games on it (games either kept skipping or just locked completely). Took awhile, but I finally figured out I had to turn off hyperthreading, but when I did, the heat of the CPU jumped up over 15 degrees C.

Question is, is that normal? Or just a weird anomaly I am experiencing? Also, why is it that I had to turn HT off to play the games?

maybe your vid card is clocked too high.

is your system oc'ed? What clock specs? Voltages? Cooling? you... need.... to..... state whether your system is oc'ed or is bone stock default.

what vid card? what about the board? did you install the chipset drivers?

I aint no God in hyper-threading but i do know it is tuned up for multi-tasking. The benches like the superPi and games will be low with the HT on. Turning it off makes my system fly. Running my 478 p4 prescott@ 4.3+ghz stable in prime(memory & cpu intensive) and games. mine is clocked this high and is damn stable gaming, so you tell me it has to be the software related problem in your case? but you need to state more info about your current system spec...

oh btw mine's supacooled...

dunno about the temps, i've just always had ht enabled and all my games work, q3, ut2k3, doom3, halo. what games are you having issues with?

Well, I tried Majesty and Half-Life and both crashed within a few minutes of playing. Other than that I don't have much games that will work on the 4mb PCI card I have in as a placeholder until the PCI-Express nVidia cards are released.

you got a 4mb PCI vid card?

State what vid card and cpu you got damn it...

It would be helpful to know what OS your running. Microsoft recommends anything other than XP, that HT be disabled in the BIOS, or else the system will probably be unstable.

I don't think your problem with your games is directly related to the cpu might want to try making sure that everything is good and newest drivers and stuff but a 4mb video card and gaming is not out of the the scope of being a oxymoron

OS is Windows XP, and of course I am using all the latest drivers, bios revisons for the mobo, etc. I thought at first it was a sound problem, but I guess I'll see how HT pans out when I get me new graphics card then.

And yes, I know the 4mb card isn't good for gaming :p, just all I can use until the PCI-Express cards are released.

Thanks for the help guys.

Older games sometimes have an issue with HT. The newer ones actually see a slight performance gain when it is turned off in some cases.

I noticed since I upgraded to a Prescott CPU Diablo II gives me this weird stuttering effect every now and then. Other than that HT has been nothing but kickass on my system.
