I realize this has been discussed before. it seems this company has a new version out.

I had been thinking about a flash SSD, but these really smoke those. Very expensive, yes. Especially with the value of the Dollar falling bad these days against the Euro or the Sterling, currently about $2300 for the device, then say 8x the cost of 2GB EEC DDR. ( I found sticks for $175 off pricewatch ) so.. 2300+1400 for the ram = 3700 for a 16GB DDR SSD.

Anyone out here with the cash that has tried one of these? or even better yet, 2 in a raid?

Obviously, takes money. But todays systems are mostly bottle neck'd by disc I/O.

I wonder if installing just Vista Ultimate on that as c:\, then always load apps and games on d:\ which in this case would be my current c:\ ( 2 Raptors in raid 0 ), would be noticeable? Think 16GB would be enough for Vista..it's a pig I know.

It is funny though, In truth, I don't really do anything that s heavy disc I/O really. It's more about Maximum PC, for the sake of MAXIMUM PC. It's my hobby, my passion, so I'm ok with spending silly amounts of money for small performance gains. ( and luckily , I have good income to support it :p )

So, I'm seriously considering at least getting one of these, max it at 16GB, and playing with it. I would love to do 2 in raid 0, but that will take a another few months of putting silly money aside.

I wonder if I eventually do the raid 0 option with 2 of these would the 680i raid controller be ok, or would a PCIx card be better?

Do you happen to have a direct link that shows how the HyperOS drives smoke a couple of SSD's? I am sure that $3700 buys quite a few 16GB SSDs.

One incredible device with one incredible price.

Damn thats a lot of money. They should have increased the slot capacity at least so you can use more sticks, 16 is just too little to justify that price.

Even with money to burn I wouldn't sink that much cash into such a big unknown.
Even if they are a lot faster, I doubt they are $3000 faster...

Get a workstation with a lot of RAM capability and use QSoft Ramdisk Enterprise to allocate a gob of ram as a ramdrive. Need to run a 64 bit OS or an enterprise version of Windows to get the most out of it though. I've got 16GB in this system with 12GB dedicated as a ramdrive. I've experimented with installing applications to it and running them from the ramdrive and yes the load speeds are simply incredible. This method does not however work as a bootable drive so you could not load Windows onto it. I use it for graphics work and have Photoshop's scratch disk set to use it. Performance of certain things in Photoshop like filters, etc is amazing.

no testing of my own, only the tests they show on their site, so suspect, of course.
Well I wouldn't trust their site as far as I can throw it. They make some rather shaky claims all over the place:

HyperOS said:
The Areca 1280 card uses the Intel IO341 chip and can carry up to 24 SATA Disks. But it can only manage a maximum Sustained Read/Write rate of 771 MB per second

The link to the news release:
http://www.areca.com.tw/news/n092706.htm
measuring read and write cache transfer rates of 1624 MB/s and 1295 MB/s respectively with sustained RAID 6 write transfer rates of 771MB/s.
What HyperOS neglects to mention is that RAID-0 throughput is unlikely limited by the I/O controller, since it does not require any parity calculation.
Also, did they consider doing a storage space parity comparison? 8 short stroked Raptors (2GB of space) vs. the HyperDrive? Of course not. Or how about a money parity comparison: Buy a couple (6-ish) of the $499 16GB nand-flash drives and stripe across them.
I think that the iRAM or this hyperOS systems thing are nice toys, but I wouldn't buy (or have bought) either if it were not for a super excellent deal. I think that the iRAM is already too expensive at $115 without ram.
