Hyperlink Hell (Excel)

At work, I have a spreadsheet stored in a folder on our shared drive with hyperlinks to PDF's in a subfolder. Periodically, I copy that whole folder to my computer for backup purposes. Last week our network went down for a few days, so I began making updates to the backup spreadsheet. I made no hyperlinks during this time because they need to be accessed by multiple users via the shared drive.

When the network was fixed, I replaced the spreadsheet on on our shared drive with the one from my computer. What has happened is that every single hyperlink was automatically redirected to the backup location of the PDF files on my computer. Each link now has a path to "C/user/myname/My Documents" folder instead of "Y:"

Why won't the hyperlinks update back to the shared drive location? Why did they change in the first place?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

What version of Excel?

My guess is you have 'update links on save' on? Yeah, that can screw things up.

file -> options -> advanced -> general -> web options -> files -> update links on save.

The quick fix would be:
1. Make a back up of your spread sheet.
2. Add a .zip to the end of the xlsx extension.
3. Dig around there until you find your content.. probably in a 'xl' folder.
4. Mass replace your local directory with your networked path.

for the future - yes.

Won't help you clean up what was already saved though.
