Hyper-V to Esxi 5.0 ?

Is there a tool or a export feature so I can export one of my servers running inside of Hyper-V. I have been playing with Esxi and kinda like it but have lots to learn and play with.

Currently, I still like Hyper-V more, but esxi has more information on how each vm is running.

No, it's free? Ahh..looks like the link I gave you goes somewhere else..not sure why..anyway..do a google search for VMware Converter. It should be a free download.
 
VMware converter is neat. Should be able to pull your VM from hyperv to exsi. Haven't played with it in awhile.
 
Hey dashpuppy I just moved 10 server from hyper-v til esxi 5.0 in my home lap work like a charme
 
Actually the only problem i'm having is make my old hyper-v host an VM on my esxi server since vmware converter can't convert GPT formatted disks.

I need my hyper-v host since it's also my home AD server, i know bad practice
 
Looks like i'm going to stay with Windows Hyper-V. ESXI is neat and all but managing it remotely via mac = pain in butt.

RDP is on every system I use Debian MAC Win7 etc etc..
 
Yeah its part of vSphere Center.

You can create, delete, move, start, stop and more. but for the more advanced things link esxi host setup you must use the win client.

I'm still in the setup face so haven't played that much with it yet.
 
The 5.0 vCenter web client works great, I use it with my mac, most of the features are there.
 
There is always the option of installing Windows 7 in a VM on the mac to get full functionality. I switched to Fusion and it's phenomenal.

to my understanding the software you are logging into with your mac is installed on another box that controls the esxi host ?

I'm trying to limit more running machines :) Not create them.. LOL!!

I just might give esxi a shot again,
 
I have it installed on two of my vCenter boxes, you use them to control your ESXi boxes anyway. Part of the appeal of ESXi is vCenter, you're missing most of the features if you run without it, especially if you're trying to "learn" ESXi and vSphere.

I'm setting up 2011 sbs and using windows 7 as my main workstation os anyway so I might just install esxi and use that instead of 2008r2. Now to back things up and convert etc etc and research the raid and other things.

As nerdalertdk said, just run vCenter on a Windows VM and RDP into it for management.

There's apparently a native Linux version now (no?), if you'd feel better, but I don't have any experience running that way.

Not seeing why this is a dealbreaker...
 
Agreed. I found it kind of odd that such an avoidable management interface issue would dictate the hypervisor solution you'd opt for.
 
what is wrong with wanting to go with the easiest to manage? I think the management interface should be just as important as anything else.
 
I guess it's a philosophical difference. It isn't like I live in the management GUI for esxi, so for me, compatibility, performance, features, etc, are the important thing. YMMV I suppose.

Agreed. We ended up building our own web-based management GUI from scratch for ESXi because the VMWare Infrastructure client (now vSphere) did not meet our needs at all. Now that ESXi can be managed from the Linux version of VMWare Workstation our lives are much easier. Our clients still use our in-house web manager though.
 
If one was to switch to esxi, how does one back up their vm's ?

Currently i run my vm's through iscsi, and use 2008r2 with hyper v. I've set-up 2008 to backup the main C: and my iscsi drive where my vm's are onto a 1tb usb drive every friday.

You can do the same thing on ESXi, except to an NFS target. Local USB disks (mapped to the host) aren't supported in ESXi.
 
Why do you care if your hardware isn't supported that shouldn't be a factor when ...... ;)

What i have right now works perfect, so i don't want to break it then be stumped etc etc.

I need to cover all my basis before i switch to esxi..
 
I was just reading mymanual for my New Qnap 410 box, and it has a built in backup utility and usb 2.0 port, it says i can connect a usb drive and have it backup my iscsi volumes. Maybe ESXI won't be out of my reach after all..
 
Curious how well it works, I'm also looking for a NAS with a built-in backup to external drive solution.

Anyone know if the Synology boxes do the same? I know most of them have USB and external SATA ports.
