Hyper-V on older AMD cpu's?

Planning to install Server 2008 R2 on my current server which right now runs WHS. It has a Athlon X2 5050e (low power part) with 2GB Ram. I verified it supports AMD-V.

Will this perform ok in Hyper-V? I'd like to run WHS (for client backups), a few Linux and Windows 7 vm's. I'm going to increase memory to 4Gb probably. The goal is to have a 24/7 server to which I can move things like uTorrent, downloading etc and use it remotely as well.
 
Need More ram. But it should perform fine. But for what you are looking at doing you will probably need at least 8 gig of ram
 
One thing you have to understand with Hyper-V is that:

1. You're running a pretty bloated OS unless you run Hyper-V Core, however it still has some good overhead requirements.
2. Hyper-V actually runs in a Parent Partition which requires overhead as well.

I ran 3 VM's in my Hyper-V environment on 8GB of memory and I had about 4-500MB available until I went to 16GB.

WHS- 2.3 GB Memory Allocated
Windows 7 for Playon- 2GB Memory Allocated
HP P4000 Virutal San Appliance- 1GB Memory Allocated.

As you can see, the overhead was consuming 2.2GB of memory running Windows Server 2008 R2 full install and the Hyper-V Parent Partition. If you are wondering about the 2.3GB memory, best practice is to apply 300MB to the first Hyper-V machine.

This should give you an idea of where you need to be.

R2 uses around 1GB by itself, not 2.2GB's. On my R2 HyperV server, I have 8.5GB's used right now - 6GB for Exchange, 750MB for DC, 600 for a TS.

Are you running Hyper-V Server Core or Full install? I'm also running a lot more roles than just Hyper-V. I should've pointed that out.

The more ram the better, im running a core2 duo E6850 @ 3.00ghz with 4 gigs ram, it runs fine. IUm running 3 vm's and it's fast on all machines.

Stuff your box full of ram, as much as you can and afford.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad I don't have to buy new hardware. I have 2GB in another pc which I can reuse and I will get another 2 if needed. Time to look for memory deals.

I got 8 gigs of ddr3 for 99$ on ebay :) scour it, or look on newegg on boxing day :)
