didn't there used to be a thread about folding and hyper threading and what the best way of doing things was?

if there is I can't find it and need it. And I probably suck at Search.

so, how should things be set up?

You run it like a dually. Make two folders, “folding_1 folding_2 or whatever names you like. Put a client in each folder. Go to run, browse to your first folder and to your .exe file. Type “C:\Folding\FAH500-Console.exe –config –local. Fill in the usual data till you get to machine # and make that machine #1. Same for client 2 except make it machine #2.

Create your short cuts using “C:\Folding\FAH500-Console.exe –forceasm”, double click and your on your way.

Have fun

hmm...for some reason I though I remembered discussion who knows how long ago about disabling HT or something.

but I can be a touch forgetful.

Actually to run two clients you must have hyperthreading turned ON. I have been running a 2.4 at 3.2 since they came out and trust me, if you want dual clients it has to be on. That is assuming you have a cpu that will run hyperthreading. P-IIIa units will not. If that's your case turn it off for sure and run only one client.

Luck

I see from your sig you have a P-IIIIe, that will hyperthread ;)

to clarify, I thought the decision was to disable HT and then run only one client.
but as I said, I'm quite good at talking out of my ass sometimes :p

There are advantages to running two clients, for example when a server problem at Stanford prevents the downloading or uploading of WU (not all that rare), or your cable/DSL is down, or even if you are on dialup and can't connect. With one stalled client the other one takes over 100% of the CPU and the machine is still producing.

Same reason some people run 3 on a dual CPU machine.

If it makes the deadline the points are similar if not always identical and you have the bonus of less wasted CPU cycles for network outages....which can mean more points.

sounds good.
I just realized I was only utilizing half of that p4 3.2e in my sig
I guess it pays to check task manager every so often and see that folding is only running at 50% cpu utilization.

But, it should be all better now.

I have found about a 15% or so benefit to running two clients on a hyper threaded machine. Every little bit helps.

Duallys are so much sweeter though. :D

15% is 15%.
Sounds like a good idea. ;)

I'm assuming that with two clients set up on the HT machine, it'll show up as 2 active cpus on stanford's page?

Yes... I have a P4C (two instances running), 2 P4 2.66 GHz and an Athlon 2000+ running right now, and Stanford shows that I have 5 active CPUs

Keep on Folding!!

I'm guessing this is for F@H, Can any one walk me through for UD?
Thanks

UD still does not support SMP. Here is the relevant UD readme post and links.

There have been at least one successful attempt using XP and fast user switching (non-Domain setups)

If it doesn't work, you can always do what Amy does and run f@h on the second CPU.

Good luck. :)

Thanks Relic, I am now running F@H on the second CPU. :D
