So i woke up this morning, and it was quite cold. I was sitting here on my pc, setting up my fantasy football roster, when it dawned on me. My pc is a foot away from my window, and i have a wind tunnel fan in my closet.

My heatsink is a hyper 212 with one fan.

I open the window, take the side panel off the side of my case, put the fan as close to the side of the case as i could, turned it on the low settings (in the end there wasn't a difference in temps between low and high) and these were the results.

Not bad for a $20 cooler :)

And no, i don't plan to run my pc with the fan and window open 24/7, i don't want to die. lol.
 
LOL not bad. I've got one with dual fans and it does great. I think they're the best coolers on the market dollar for dollar.
 
I do as well. Phenom II 955BE at 4.1Ghz cpu/nb and ht as high as I can get them, 1.4v temps in a hot room hit maybe 48c extreme loads 42c average. Push/pull mx4 paste dual stock fan in a raven 3 case.

Its a great cooler, like you said MacLeod $ for $ probably one of the best, there is some newer interesting options that achieve solid results, but its the original, heck even CM couldn`t make it better then what it already is :p

Just hang the whole PC out the window and run wires through a foam sealed hole. I did that one winter at university in the dorm. Space was tight in our dorm room and it dropped temps a solid 20C across the board, often more depending on the weather. Used one of those rope fire-escape ladders and some zip ties. The only downside (aside from when I wanted to change components) was that birds wanted to nest on the nice warm computer outside our window :/

Be careful with the fan though, if there's a large enough temperature difference between the components getting cold air blown on them and the rest of the room you could potentially develop condensation on the back side of the mobo or something.
 
How much was your temperature BEFORE doing this experiement? Wondering how much you dropped. Anyway it was a good/interesting idea and thanks for posting.
 
thats a pretty big temperature delta.

I think the only thing with any computer is, obviously the condensation problem, possibly the contraction/expansion and cold boot bugs which all parts face differently. I do have to caution you on the hard drive though, I have read numerous times, it is extremely bad for mechanical hard drives to have a big temperature delta generally if they are 22c-45c or so they are ok but below or above this, well it can cause bad things to happen. They do have an operational temperature range for a reason, last thing you want is the hard drives "breather hole" to get ice stuck in it
 
Just an update, to own myself. I just recently replaced my old antec 1200 that i got at launch with a xclio 787 case that was 50% off. It has 10 fans in it, AND its giving me the same load temps without the window open and with a high powered fan, as my old 1200 case did with them! lol
 
its not the # of fans, but thier directionality e.g air intake/exhaust % of total volume as well as thier placement. Most cases may throw a ton of fans in them, but it speaks volumes when cases that have like 1/2 sometimes even 1/4 the fans achieve very close to the same results. Not the size, nor the flow that counts, its the smoothness of the actions that gets you the results :p
 
Those of you that have 2 fans (push/pull ) on a 212 plus or evo , how much did second fan help .

I ask cause on my evo I noticed with one fan even running it at higher % doesn't seem to amount to much, maybe 1 or 2c max decrease running high rpm@ max load .
 
well, I know in my raven 3 with a 955 clocked to 4.055 and volts at 1.41 temps with single fan loaded(LinX) would peak at 58-60c second fan brings me to 48-53c so it can make quite a large difference(allows me to hit higher clocks on cpu and cpu/nb) obviously depending on mounting pressure and thermal paste used and how its applied etc.

I would hazard to say the 212+ push/pull of the same stock fan(69cfm one) is about 5c loaded and maybe 2-4c idle for me. Not sure with Intel though, never did get to try out my E8400 clocked up before I got my 955 at the time.

I think I got 2C difference by adding the 2nd fan. If youre overclocking to your max potential then that 2C makes a big difference. If not, it aint worth it. I just got a 2nd fan CM fan like the one that came with it.
 
Lol that got better temps than my watercooling setup with my 920 at 4 ghz, with similar vcore.

Then again, I was using it in a case with limited airflow and 25 C ambients.
 
thanks for reply , I only OC very mildly , 3570k >4.0ghz , I might go a little higher but doubt I would try above 4.4-4.5 .
It just seemed from stock fan speed (600 rpm idle to 1100rpm or so max ) to a tweaked fan rpm curve ( idle= 1000rpm, max =1750rpm) only gained tinny bit . this is with AS5 paste and in Corsair 500r case , get like 60c with prime 95 and low 50c in games . which is about normal I guess.

Anyway don't want to high jack OP anymore.

i always wanted to do this but the heating bill would be too much. Considering it's -10c outside right now (i live in canada), i'm pretty sure i can do 4ghz and not worry about noise with my setup but... the heating bill ><
