HWMonitor records CPU temps unusually low

CPU fan is running intentionally at 75% speed, because it's a little noisy at full volume. Hardware involved is in my sig, everything still running at stock speeds. As I was making this post, CPU temps dropped to 23 C and are stable.

I'm using the stock case fans, with the rear fan moved to the lower side and acting as an exhaust. (The H50 comes with its own fan, which I have in a rear intake position. Not using push-pull right now). The case fans only have Molex connectors, so they're plugged directly into the PSU power cables and presumably running at full speed.

The BIOS says that CPU temps are 30-33 C idle.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out why HWMonitor is reporting CPU temps about 10 C lower than the BIOS is.

You have to remember that inside the BIOS, the CPU is in a completely different power state. It does not load any power saving features and will always show a higher temperature at "idle".

I'd say HWMonitor will get you a very close estimation on how hot your processor is running if the diodes are up to snuff. Also, Thubans have a tendency to report incorrect temperatures while idle... at least, they did when I owned one. Not sure if that's changed.

Does that hold true for SandyBridge Core i7s?

BIOS reports 41-43 deg C while HW monitor reports 32-ish deg C (cool-it ECO all-in-one watercooling).

Built a charity system for someone and don't want it to be problematic, given that it will be a 6 hour drive way from me and across the Canadian border.

MSI P67-GD65, Core-i7 2600K, not (yet) overclocked.

Thanks,

If you have Intel just grab RealTemp. A lot of people seem to really like that, me included. Oh and what does the BIOS actually read? My EVGA is currently, on the LCD thingy, saying I am at 18C, yet I am at 30-34C.

The reading in the BIOS is not the CPU itself, but the socket. It's the same reading as TEMP0 in HWMonitor.

AS for the OP, Thuban's core sensors read about 10-15c too low. It's a known issue. As long as you keep the reading under 60c, you will not run into thermal issues.

So I enabled "Cool n' Quiet" and C1E in the BIOS, and TMPIN0 went down to 24-25C idle, with individual core temps fluctuating from 17-19C idle. Pretty impressive! And the CPU is using just a little over 60 watts of power, with the CPU fan still spinning at 75% during idle. So the temps could go even lower if I increased the CPU fan speed to its full power, I reckon.

those temps are wrong.....

its a known issue with a Phenom II X6, at idle the temp's are borked to hell and back, only load is somewhat reliable.

i noticed the opposite. my hwmonitor records cpu higher than real temp or other programs...

Agreed, load temps on my 1055t are in the mid 30's in core temp. I add 20 degrees to that for a rough estimate of temps. I hope Bulldozer sensors are a little more accurate.
