humming from my speakers

my bro has two decent size speakers connected to a reciever, which is conenct to his onboard audio. when no sound is playing, there is a humming sound which increases with volume level. you can almost here it when stuff is playing too. if muted though, its perfect, no hum.

any suggestions?
 
Sounds like a sound card problem. I had a similar issue but it happened even when the comp was off, it was a problem with the cable hooked up to the sound card. A simple fix in that case, but you may need to check if the sound card itself isn't the problem.

This is almost certainly a ground loop condition.
Try a simple experiment.
Touch the outer portion of the input jack on the receiver when the system is humming.
Did it just stop?
If it did Epanorama dot net has a ton of information about what it is and how to solve it.
Of course if you are using a Radio Sack cable then you won't need to look any further to find the problem. ;)
 
are u hooked up to a coax cable source? Unplug the coax cable....let me know if this works (btw it is a grround loop prblem)
 
Check the connections on the reciever and sound card. My speakers produce a humming sound when the cable isn't pushed in all the way.
 
If you got your computer hooked to your receiver as well as your TV the noise interference is comming from the CABLE connected to your TV. The ONLY sures I've heard for this is to ground out the cable box to the ground circuit in your phone line box or another good ground source like an electrical box....from what I heard the phone line ground is the best for this situation.
