Hey everyone. So I'm interested in setting up some type of home server in the near future. I'd like to host the standard HTPC stuff: music, TV shows and movies, etc. I also would like to be able to host work files from the server. As a web designer/developer, that would mean larger Photoshop files as well as a web server where I can host and work on HTML/PHP/etc.
Does this need to be accessible via the internet? Could be, I'm not so interested in accessing music and movies through the internet, but it could potentially be very helpful to access work files from anywhere with an internet connection.
I'd like to access it with at least my PC laptop and Macbook, as well as possibly from my Iphone/Android phone/Android tablet for music and movies.
Here's the obligatory Q&A:
1. What will you be doing with this PC? Local web server, file server accessible via internet. Either by FTP/SFTP or another type of login.
2. What's your budget? I'd like to keep it under $400 if possible. More hard drives can be added later. Might be able to go up more if it's necessary.
3. Where do you live? US, close to Fry's but I buy from Amazon and Newegg as well.
4. What exact parts do you need for that budget? Basically everything. I have a Linksys E1000 router I'll be using.
5. If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Don't think so.
6. What specific features do you need in a motherboard? At least 4 SATA ports. Probably integrated video as well. Would like to get a 27" 1440p monitor in the future so Dual-link DVI, although I was thinking of running this headless as well.
7. What resolution output do you need? Might not be necessary, as I don't mind running this headless.
8. Does this system need to fit into a particular space? Not really
9. How comfortable are you with custom case design/modification and electrical wiring? Done it before, but I'm okay with plugging everything in and going.
10. How important is the noise/silence of this sytem? I'd like it relatively quiet, it might be in the living room near the modem/router.
11. How mobile does this system need to be? I won't move it.
12. Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? I have licenses for Win7 HP and Ultimate.
13. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Within the next few months.
Thanks for the help guys.
