I'm going to build a htpc to replace my stereo system that the ex-wife is getting. There's a local computer chain that has really good deals on computer parts, but they don't carry the Radeon 9800 pro.

I'm wondering if anyone can offer opinions on the video cards and tv tuner cards they do offer:

any help/opinions will be appreciated.

I have a Radeon 9600pro in my HTPC. That is enough unless you want to do high res gaming on it. If you get anything higher, you will have fan noise coming from the hsf. The 9600pro does generate some noise but not a whole lot. If you want silent, the 9600 nonpro can run without a fan on the heatsink.

Which DIT do you shop at? Iowa? Nebraska? Never bought anything there personally. (I'm work in Des Moines) Prices are not that good and I'm patient enough to wait for order from internet.

what's the difference between the 9600 pro and nonpro? What are you losing for the nonpro to run cooler?

I shop at one of the ones in Omaha. As far as prices, I'm mainly looking at motherboards/processors/video cards, and their prices seem to run on par with places that offer good deals online.

The only difference between pro and nonpro is the speed of the gpu and memory speeds. Tech-wise they are the same. Just don't get a 9600se. Those are neutered versions of the 9600 core.
