Sorry for the newbish questions, I was just wondering what options are available for someone wanting to turn old PC parts into a HTPC for us with a DirectTV setup?

My girlfriend has DirectTV and likes the BeyondTV setup I built for myself to use with my cable.

Would a similiar setup be viable for Satellite? For some reason my initial thought is no, but I thought I'd check to be sure.

Thanks!

First off. Post what parts you have.

Second, there's little difference in Cable vs Sat as a source for an HTPC when you're recording SD.

Hd is a whole different story.

I'm pretty sure DirectTV uses a proprietary signal that a tuner card won't accept. I have asked around for quite a while, and that is the only answer I got. I know some other satellite companies use DVB based signals that you can get a nice tuner for.

Satellite will work, but you will still have to use the STB box. Basically, you will need to feed the signal from the STB into the tuner card via S-Video and control the STB with either a serial cable or IR blaster to change the channel.
