What method do you guys use to grab and stream videos from your desktop computer to your HTPC? Both are Win 7 for me? Homegroup is an option, but I'm forced to move the individual movie over to the OS drive to stream to my HTPC if I want to use it. Is there a way to give my HTPC access to the whole of my desktop PC?

Share the folder on the desktop. Map the folder as a network drive.

simple network shares work great or you can use a mapped network drive like xLokiX said...

on a similar note there are great apps out there that let you airplay to your PC.

My wife and I have been using our iPhones to Airplay videos and music and even mirroring our phones (2 at the same time) to our HTPC and it works great!

I use a dedicated Media Server running FlexRAID + Plex Media Server software, then any of my clients can install Plex Media Center and playback the whole library.

You can install Plex Media Server on any Windows or Mac based system (I believe there is Linux support as well), so you could drop it on your Desktop PC. No need for a separate server/pc.

Streaming over Samba? Not recommended.

I use mezzmo media server..

And why exactly is in not recommended? Works perfectly for me and many others around here.

OP, just share the folder on your desktop, easiest way and it'll work just fine. There is no need to go making shit all complicated.

This.. works great here. Most of the time I copy what I want to play to the HTPC's drive (have a shortcut on my desktop and the thing's drive is semi-permanently mounted) but have on occasion streamed something from the fileserver over samba. even 1080p h.264 stuff works flawlessly as the GPU on the FM1 chip does most of the decoding gruntwork.

Works fine for me, and has for years. If you have a mixed network, or are streaming to tablets, rokus, and ps3s something like plex can definitely make your life easier. If you are just sharing between windows pcs, it's kinda pointless imo.

With that said, I do have plex running on my server, but it is just for streaming to tablets and cellphones. My main htpc just uses shares from the server, so do the extenders.

Usually the HTPC is on all the time (if recording TV at least), so I've made mine (MythTV) the network server for all my files -- Videos, music, even the Windows 'My Documents' folder. Then I've got a backup job that runs every day. All my files are safe and sound -- and always accessible.
