HTPC remote questions

Hi guys,

So I have a Slingbox Pro HD set up back home, and I am trying to figure out the best way to stream it to my HDTV using as fewest devices as possible.

Right now I use a temporary laptop connected through VGA and 3.5mm audio to my HDTV. I control it with a regular wireless mouse, and all I have to do is sleep the laptop, and my HDTV automatically shuts off when no VGA connection is detected. However, it does not do this with an HDMI connection, which is my preferred connection choice. I would have to use the mouse + the HDTV's remote if I wanted to turn the TV on/off through HDMI.

I'm wondering if maybe I could build some HTPC with a remote sensor, and get a universal remote that can sleep the HTPC, and turn my HDTV on/off? Also maybe set a button to launch Slingplayer, and possibly be able to control at least some of the basic functions as well?

I may be asking too much, but any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Well you could always go the Logitech harmony remote route, and usb ir reciever for the computer, then program the activities you want in the remote.

I second the Harmony remote. I've had one for about 5 years and it rules. Programming it is so simple and fast. I know you can have it send button signals, although it's a bit limited. I have the Harmony 720 and have one of the custom buttons to launch MCE. Also have it set up to put the computer to sleep with a push of a button.

I also have a harmony, depending on the IR receiver you get, it may support mouse mode as well. As for me, I am now using myRemote for android, I get mouse and keyboard control plus full media center remote capabilites. I also set it up so I can use it over 3G from anywhere in the world lol.

I just found out its only RECORDED video you can watch remotely. They are working on live tv and an android app.

and i just found a work around, you can start the recording remotely, and then it shows up as recorded and you can watch it while it records lol
