HTPC Problems

I have a damn problem with my htpc. I installed a 3850 card in my HTPC but i cannot get it to display on my tv. I have a sony 40" tv, using the HDMI connecter and the screen always goes black. I'm really getting fed up to the point of throwing the HTPC out the window. What driver version works best with this card? Everything worked good through the installation of vista till i freaking installed the drivers from the ati website. I'm just fed up, is this my problem or ATI's?

Is your 3850 HDCP compliant?
Many TV's dont play nice unless the HDCP chain is complete.

Yes it is HDCP compliant as everything was working fine without installing the driver from ATI. Booted up everything and I could see on the TV everything. Wham, installed the newest set of drivers from ATI, and no signal to the TV after reboot. It's a bit annoying as I don't know if I should start from scratch and install an older set of drivers that actually works.

A couple of things to check:
- the PC must output a very specific signal. Ensure the resolution exactly matches what your TV can display. A 1080p tv must receive a 1920x1080 (60 MHz) picture from the PC. 1080i, 720p and 720i, will be different resolutions and/or refresh rates.

- I had a lot of problems with the frequency (MHz). My PC wanted to output 59MHz. My TV would not work on 59MHz, it had to be 60MHz. Ensure the signal from the PC is 30 or 60 MHz, exactly.

- I had issues with the PC auto detecting the TV when I moved the video cable from the monitor to the TV. And it seems with ATI cards that you can't configure the video over remote desktop.

Try this:
Plug a computer monitor in, configure the video card for the *TV*. The monitor should be able to display more signals than the TV. Use CCC and "force" the resolution and refresh rate (MHz). Create a profile in CCC with the settings for the TV. Then move the cable back to the TV.

Can't offer much help other than to say I have a Sony SXRD and had a 3450 card in my rig about 6 months ago. It worked fine over component cables and once I found the resizing option, I was able to get rid of some overscan.

I know it provides no answers but for some reason an ATI card worked with my Sony TV. The SXRD is a rear projection LCD tv.

Well I think it's the video card. I put my monitor and when it goes through the windows thing and it goes to high res, the screen goes to garbage and the screen turns to a all green. changes color every time i reboot. Bummer.

Try, turning everything off, unplug the computer, and re-seat the video card. Ensure the video cable is plugged in firmly.
