I was just wondering if anyone knows when hauppage and other tuner companies will start mass producing HTPC digital tuners, or if they ever will. I have a 1600 with QAM support, but as I understand it a digital cable card would be different. I have looked around and know that cable cards exist. However, the only ones I have seen you have to purchase in a name brand PC (expensive). Anyone know if these tuners be available in the near future at a reasonable price. The reason why I ask this is because of the 2009 supposed switch to digital by the major cable providers. Without a digital tuner the main aspect of my htpc (tv/dvr) will disappear. That is if the major frontend QAM support remains where it is now. Thanks

Unless MS gets to designing good drivers for cable cards and digital tuners I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Most likely true digital tuners for PC's will not be out for a while. I am not even sure if the cable companies will allow the use of digital PC tuner cards. Won't their digital signals be encrypted?

It doesn't matter, check the FAQ for some links to the reasons why we won't see Cable Card tuners on Best Buy's shelfs anytime soon (within the next three years).

Hauppauge has a component input tuner coming out soon, thats the best you'll get because of all the prohibitions with digital tuners.

the 2009 switchover is only for OVER THE AIR BROADCASTS. Cable companies can do whatever they want. A few are allready only digital using SDV and such.

The group that regulates cable cards says they need to certify complete PCs with cablecard, so you won't see addon cable card tuners until they drop that requirement.
