So here is my situation. I currently have a 1155 intel motherboard, and a decent video card in my closet. I was looking to make a HTPC out of it however the more I think about it the more I believe this idea is "overkill". I'm not looking to spend lot of money. I currently priced out:

BIOSTAR Hi-Fi A85S3 FM2 AMD A85X

AMD A6-5400K Trinity Dual-Core 3.6GHz

APEX DM-387 Black Steel Micro ATX Media Center

Around $145 total. I have no idea what hard drive to get, or if this build would even be worth it. I'm looking to run Kodie and eventually rip my DVD collection for easy media playback. I'd hope not to spend more then $250 total. Any suggestions to add/remove or change? I'm currently missing RAM, DVD, and HD.

I picked up a Samsung 840 (128GB) on sale for pretty cheap -- awesome for an HTPC. SSD not overkill for an HTPC - totally recommend it.

My HTPC has the A6-6400K, using the "on-board" for video, works very well. 8GB RAM total -- gave the video 2GB, OS gets 6GB, everyone is happy :)

Considered a SSD but I'd need more space to copy my DVDs. Not sure if a "green" drive or just go for a standard?

You could always find a cheap ~64Gig SSD for the OS and some 5400rpm drive for bulk storage. (if there's room, a 3.5" WD Green would be fine) That's what i'm doing with my HTPC right now, works great.

For the OS, I would still highly recommend dropping in an SSD -- makes a huge difference IMO.

I keep forgetting, not everyone has a server in the basement for storage space. Then again, I don't rip my movies -- watch them on disc once and put them away. I rarely watch a movie / show more than once. If I pull something from the server, it a 1GB link, so haven't had any issues to date. Mostly stream my music from the server.

For storage, there 1TB and 2TB dives are pretty dang cheap now days.

If you get a WD Green drive make sure that you set the head park time to 5 minutes.
