HTPC as Main PC?

I was thinking about using an HTPC as my only computer in a few months. I'll probably be pairing it with one of the new Westinghouse 37" 1080p (1920x 1080) monitors. My question is this. Will uses like internet browsing and instant messaging work well in this situation? The same goes for Microsoft Office apps.

Also, part of the problem is that I wouldn't be sitting as close to this as I would to a normal monitor.

Should be fine if you get a comfortable place to sit.

I'm not sure how well that panel scales, but if visibility is an issue at such a high res, you could back it off to something more readable like 1280x720 for work time and then crank it back up to watch movies and stuff.

You'd probably want to sit a little further back than on a normal monitor but it's your call. As far as using Office and IM'ing, it'll be fine. Sit too close and you'll be moving your head all over the place to look at stuff, in addition to the pixel pitch on screen that size. When I'm browsing the web on the HTPC I have hooked to mine, I sit about 3-4 feet back and it's perfect.

instead of getting 72 dpi i think u get like 52 dpi on those westies

I used to have the Westy 37" (as well as the Sceptre 37") used with my HTPC as the main computer in the living room...the main thing for me was the remote keyboard / mouse (RF is still kinda quirky form time to time) and the font / icon sizing. Everything else should be fine. Here's a pix of my present 42" Sceptre used as the main computer / htpc:
