HT retries@stock clocks

Hey guys, I'm a folder for EOC, but I've been coming here for the wealth of 4p system information, and I have to say you guys have helped me out a lot.

Currently I'm getting too many HT retries to count, it's at LEAST 1 a second on two different nodes.

Pretty much I did the entire tears bios guide, was only able to overclock 5% with accepted HT retries. I got bored and tried 225, ruined the WU and gave up on OC'ing. Did the reset function, flashed the bios BACK off super micro's latest available download. Their sites down so I can't provide the link.

At first I only had 8 cores after that. Resetting the BIOS to optimal defaults again fixed that, but now I have this problem at stock clocks. Any ideas? Also if I left any thing out please ask.

Also, what's a node, should I reset my CMOS, and could not resetting that "GRUB quiet spash clocksource=hpet" have any thing to do with this? Thank you

Troubleshooting

Problem: HT retries, performance significantly below expectations, HT Link Sync errors
- Visually inspect gold pads on the bottom of each CPU and the socket pins
- Blow some compressed air on both
- See how light reflects off CPU pads; you'll definitely see a difference if there's TIM residue
- Use rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs/q-tips to clean the CPU pads - wet, then dry
- No matter what, DO NOT touch socket pins!
 
Yep, ht-reties at stock frequency is almost always caused by dirty pads on the CPU.
 
Oh ok, I thought I would take a different approach since I didn't have any retries at first. Sounds good thanks guys
 
Hmmmm..... let me get this straight. No ht-retries on stock BIOS, install the ONG BIOS with too high of an OC, and then reinstall stock BIOS and still get ht-retries?

If that is the case, that makes zero sense right off hand.
 
It doesn't make too much sense, agreed. Though other symptoms (cores "disappearing") warrant taking a look at mechanical bits I think.
 
After a thorough inspection of all pins and CPU pads, I was not able to find any problems. I still cleaned all of the pads any way. The HT retries are still through the roof, which you can use my first post as a reference. I have a feeling what I've read in the Turion Power Control doesn't seem right. This is a lot of information, I apologise. But if any of you have the time and are familiar with how this SHOULD look, please let me know. I have 4x6180 processors, these commands were input while folding.

EDIT: I'll also mention that my motherboard squeals like a pig. It has done this with two different power supplies, two different processors (4x6128's) and two different power sources. Of course the squealing really comes out under full load.

Sounds like something is up with the MB. It should not squeal at all. That is an indicator that something is wrong. Since you get this to happen with different CPUs and power supplies, I would definitely say it is the MB. Do the ht-retries and squeal happen while idle or just under load?
 
No HT tries @ idle, really only at full load. I'm not sure if web browsing sets those off, haven't checked lol. The squealing is there at idle, but quiet. It can still be heard from a couple feet away. Under load it's about 10x louder. I should probably look into an RMA lol
 
I just thought I'd mention this for other peoples reference. The board that Super Micro gave me for the RMA fixed all of the problems. No more screeching, and namely no more HT retries. I'm getting about 1 every minute or so now. Thanks for all of your help.
 
Excellent, glad to hear it. Have you gotten it all set up now?
 
Though 1 every minute is much better, it is still not ideal. Switching around weaker CPUs to sockets with higher power delivery can zero out the ht-retries all together.
