HT Frequency + new rig ?'s

Im a little green when it comes to physically overclocking but know how to do it in concept. So im trying to overclock my ram and cpu, right now i got my fsb up to 235 at 2.5-3-3-5 with Patriot PC3200+XBL so i know they can go a lot higher. And my 3200+ Winny is at 2.35 ghz. I tried to run 240 fsb but it locked up on my desktop. I have searched the forums and havent found anything to help me answer my question and it is, what is HT Frequency? The user manual says "This setting specifies the maximum operating frequency of the link's transmitter clock." WTF???? Sounds like lawyer talk to me. I had it at 5x but it wouldnt post so i lowered it to 2x and it ran 3dmark01 with no problems.

Oh and it might be helpful is I tell you what my motherboard is :D , MSI K8N Neo4. Any tips that you wanna give me on overclocking would be appreciated. Im not looking to set any record, not even close. Just want a slight overclock. Im happy with what i got right now but i would like to see how far i can push my system. I will probably just leave it where its at right now. And any comments on overclocking the videocard. Right now i dont have any urge to mess with that cause i havent seen any results that show its really worth it, just a few more points in the benchmarks. Sorry for all the ?'s but its a new rig and im starting to tweak with it after running it for 2 or 3 weeks.

my spec's are MSI K8N Neo4 Plat, PDP PC3200+XBL, 3200+ Winny, ATI X800XL, 2 74gb Raptors :D , Antec 480 Neopower. Oh and i got a zalman 7700cu, i love how fricken huge it is but it doesnt look big in my full tower.
 
HT is the speed at which your On Chip memory controller functions.. It use to be all governed by the FSB on Athlon Xp rigs.. Anyway, to get higher overclocks drop the HT to 4 or 3. You dont want your ht any higher than 1000mhz. You may also want to drop your multiplier a notch or two. Make sure your voltages are up as well.
Dropping your HT doesnt really affect preformance that much as long as your raising the FSB.
All these functions are found under the Cell Menu under Bios Setup.

Just curious.. What is the point of running an SLI mobo with an ATI card?
 
Thx for your reply, i will give it a try today and try to overclock it a little more. And its not an SLI board, its the Ultra version.
 
another question, i have been running f@h for a couple of hours now and even with the oc, core center is showing that my temp is still 30C which is no change over stock temps. i know the winnys run cooler than newcastle but 30C? oh and this is at 100% cpu usage cause i have f@h running right now. so is core center wrong about the temps or is my winny just that cool?
 
Nope.. Corecell is reporting incorrect temps. Usaul cause of this is installing MotherBord Monitor or something like that. If you did install mbm make sure you have it set correctly, it sounds to me like you are getting the ambient case temps. My Chip idles at about 31c at 27c ambient temp, stock cooling. If you did not install Mbm check for an update to corecell and if you still have no luck reset your pc and jump into Bios under hardware monitor and see what that reports.

dead wrong. sorry. the memory controller is always at the same speed of the cpu.

the ht link is what connects the cpu to the chipset. the memory controller has nothing to do with it.

look at page 5.

long story made short, keep the ht link under 1ghz.
so from a htt speed of 200-250, use 4x ht multi
250-333, 3x
333-400, 2.5x
and i'll be damned impressed if you can get past 400mhz :D

though only a64's have htt, and the fsb runs at the speed of the cpu.

this is because fsb connects the cpu core to the memory controller. since this is typically on a seperate chip, fsb is relatively low, but on a64's, there's no reason to have a cpu and memory controller at the same speed and have slow bus between them on the same die, so it too runs at cpu speed. makes sense, no?
 
A64's have the memory controller on die. So they arent restricted by an FSB on the motherboard. The HTT isnt meant to go above 1000 on 939 boards and 800 on 754 boards. So at 200Mhz at the memory, ur HT multi shud be 5x. Anythin above and u shud drop oit down to 4x. above 250 down to 3x and so on.

With ur OC. Up the vCore and the vDimm a little. Also i dont kno about ur particular ram. but try loosening timings at that speed?
Another thing to consider, ur CPU may have reached its limit? drop down the CPU multi and keep pumpin up FSB. This lets u reach ur memory limit before ur cpu hits its limit. Then u can find the sweet spot between the multi and FSB for bandwidth and speed.
