how do i remove the hsf off of my powercolour 9600 pro

Look on the back of the card and there sould be 2 little screws there, push them in or clamp them together then push in.

Btw welcome to the forums.

i know all about that but wats the safest way of taking it off cause when u remove the pins the hsf dosent just fall off

ok take and once you get the pins out
put the card in the freezer for about 20 minutes

Then it should pop off

isnt there any other way like using a skrewdriver or sumthin

For mine, i just played some games for a good hour or two. That got the card hot enough to soften up the goo under the hsf. I just twisted my hsf off right after i shut down my comp. Worked for me, no probs.

sounds a lot better than sticking ur card in a freezer for 20 mins

freezer trick is really for epoxies, the thermal pad on ATi cards will probably respond better to heat. You could try a hair dryer, but you run the risk of static death. If you DID want to use a screw driver, put a credit card or somethign else underneath it, so you dont scratch the PCB when you do so. Good luck

ill try that take it off with a skrew driver tomorrow when my new HS arrives
btw thanks 4 all your help

dude.. DO NOT USE THE SCREW.. there is a reason why its called a screw driver..

anyways.. get the card hot.. remove the pins.. twist and turn and viola the hsf should come right off..

Just carefully twist off. If you apply continual gentle pressure the sink will come off. It usually only takes a minute or two.

I'll stand by my screw driver recommendation. If you use a flat head and you have a credit card (or other anti-abrasive ;D 'mat') you should be fine. This is a recommendation for adhesives, or other 'sticky' substances. sometimes you just need the extra leverage. In the case of your 9600, the core has a very small surface area/die, so you probaly wont need to pry anything off, especially since the TIM is not an adhesive. Warm it up, and pop it off, shouldn't even be an issue.

hopefully sumtime this week ill be able to take the HS off and replace it with my new one,if it eva gets here that is

you can also heat it up with a hair dryer. This is what I did to remove my NB heatsink on my mobo. Worked like a charm.

I'm going to have to advise against the freezer/pry meathod as this is how I managed to nerf my ti4200. That HSF was epoxied to the core. I froze for 30 minutes, used a credicard and pried with a very small flathead screwdriver. I managed to pop off the HSF but my card never worked again. I dont know if it was the freezing or the prying.

Atleast now I have an ATI card.

If I understand this post. A ti4200 card placed in a freezer for 30 minutes and worked over with a screwdriver will turn into an ATI card?
