HSF Upgrade a Downgrade?

Hey, my friend gave me a new heatsink - he used it for his 2500, and got a new one for OCing. I have an XP2000. I dont OC, stock speeds/voltages.

I used AS5, and was careful in applying the AS5.

well, right now, Idle im @ 47C, Full Load = 52.

I have 2 case fans, 1 intake, 1 exhaust both 80mm's.

Why are my Temps Higher w/ upgraded HSF // AS5.

note- there are some MINOR scratches on the bottom of the HSF, noticeable, but not deep. Would this be why Im higher?

Also - the room is <70F, no heaters or air conditioners are near it. Its in an open area.

PLEASE HELP!

Um....

What heatsink did you friend give you?

What heatsink did it replace?

These would be good things to know.

Also, AS5 takes time to break in. Give your computer a couple days, then check the temps again.

I'll Post Pics as soon as I upload them. Sry.

This is Day 3 of the AS5, it said like ~50 hrs, and its past that point now.

back to the pics =0

when we put together my bro's comp, his temps were outrageous. roughly same as yours. i dont know how hot it is now, he wont install MBM.

That new one looks like a Speeze or Sipre cooler (not the best by any stretch of the imagination) but should easily perform better than that small BLURRY HSF you had

more pics added, including an AIDA Temp reading, HSF reading, and Voltages. Hope that'll help some.

JPG of AIDA readng is up- still fuzzy tho - =/

Looks like a Speeze WhisperRock of some sort. Did it have a copper slug in the base?

Also, it should be performing better. Are you sure you installed properly? Also, silly question, but did you clean off the CPU die first?

installed properly yes, old thermal die, of course. I used Isopropyl Alcohol to get the old die off, and a layer of AS5

=/

it says ur mobo is 38C
thats very hot for a room thats less than 70F
it should idle around 25C or so and load around 30C or so

if that mobo temp is correct, then your case needs better ventilation, perhaps your case fans arent pushing enuf CFM. or you fans could be covered in dust

see for youself
room temp:88F ~31C
system temp:35C
CPU: 51C

those are load temps

my idle temps (which i dont know rite now) are about:
room 80F ~ 27C
system: 33C
CPU: 46C

I dont know exact room temp - somewhere in teh 60's FARENHEIT. I took the side panel off, no dust on the fans, reinstalled my HSF - even put another dab of AS5 on, right now, Idle Temps =
34C Mobo
43C CPU.

I **THINK** the problem lies with the application of the AS5 to the HS Core. I used a paper towel, I dunno if thats good or bad.. Dont flame me if I made a dumb mistake, but I dunno

Thanks for all you're help and suggestions!

The ideal application of AS5 is a thin layer applied over the entire core. After you get a fine layer, then install the heatsink making sure not move or smugde the heatsink around on the AS5 when you clamp it down.

It doesn't really matter HOW you apply it, as long as you get consistant results, and that means a thin, somewhat kinda almost translucent film covering your core. It may take a while to get it like that, so take your time and have patience.

Hmmm... The only thing that raised my eye-brow was the fact that you used paper towels.... maybe some lint got left on the core? I always use disposable camea lens-cleaner tissues when I'm putting on thermal compound to avoid just that...

I didnt use paper towels on the core, I used the paper towels for the layer on the heatsink itself. I used a butter knife to Dab AS5 on the core. and the HS was my pallette. Almost sounds poetic.

The fan is different, the design is different. Does the fan push the same amount of air? The design of the heatsink may not work as well, even though it is bigger.

I'm boggled that you thought that heatsink would lower your temps. It's the same extruded aluminum crap..
