Hello,
I was given a computer by a friend and it's an Emachine T5212 with overheating issue. It's equipped with a low end Pentium D 2.66ghz processor. I have cleaned out the dusts, removed the dried up thermal pad that was on it and applied arctic silver ceramique. Temperature in the bios says 59-63c for the processor and the motherboard sensor is 39-41c. Still pretty hot (it shuts down 5min after booting into WindowsXP) so I want to upgrade the heatsink for it. The problem is the current heatsink bolts onto the motherboard (tiny screw-in hole) and there's no backplating. I believe it's a socket 775 but do you think I will be able to install a new heatsink with/without a backplate?
Such as this one for example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154002
edit: culprit to shutting down might be the power supply since its a common problem.
