HSF recomendations for XP 2500+ Barton

I'm looking to possibly do a little overclocking on my XP 2500+ Barton and was looking for some suggestions on a Heatsink/Fan to replace the stock one. I'm not looking to go OC'ing crazy so I'm not looking for exotic cooling like water cooling. Just a better HSF that's a good price/noise/cooling balance. This is my first time overclocking and I'm not aiming for anything specific like bumping it up to 3200+ equivilant speeds. I'll be happy if I can just get up to 1.9-2ghz.

Here's the specs of what i'm running atm:
XP 2500+ Barton
1 gig Crucial PC2700
Abit NF7 mobo

What are acceptable temps for an 2500+? Stock it idles at about 41/42 C, case temp is 25C.

If you aren't trying to get extreme, why don't you just start with seeing what the retail heat sink will do for you? Keep the temps under 50C or so, and see where it takes you.
 
i have a volcano 10 on mine... cheap.. i think you can get em for like 15 bucks on ebay now... and i'm at 2.3ghz with the same setup as you... 2500barton+nf7... i would go higher, but my mobo is having problems... can't change the cpu voltage
 
I had some bad luck. I could get mine up to 3200 speeds, and it would run fine, until I played BF1942. It was the only thing that would not run right (would crash out), when I had it overclocked. So since I play the game a lot, I put it back to stock settings and everything works fine again.

I found it strange.

I have a Vantec Tornado 92mm
And a Swiftech MCX462-V
 
Look into a Thermalright ALX-800 for about $20... add any good 80 or 92mm fan. 900a if you want copper and a little bit better temps.

Or a Zalman 7000a-alcu/7000a-cu, these work well and are very quiet.

try flashing with the latest bios, the 2500+ should run at 3200+ with NO problem maybe up the voltage up a little
 
im running my 2500+ at 2.23(11x205) on a A7V8XDeluxe with geil pc3200 512. i had to up the vcore to 1.675 but it runs prime for days. i did all of this with the stock hsf with temps at 50c. i have a TT dragon orb 3 on it now and it runs at 47c. those temps are while running CS. i dont really need the orb anymore if you want to buy it. im going with a swiftech mcw5000pt with a little modding. lmk if intrested.
 
One thing I don't understand is that BF crashes whenever I have the processor overclocked (FSB). Or higher multiplier numbers. It's weird.
My temps are in the low to mid 40's but yet it still crashes. I've raised the Vcore up and still had the same issue. I think it's just a bad chip that I got.

you sure you gave it enough voltage?
 
Thanks for the input all. I have a few ideas of what I might want to get. As someone suggested I started overclocking slightly with the stock HSF. I've pushed it up to 1.96 ghz at 11.0 x 178 FSB. So far not stability problems, idle it runs at 38C. Seems to top out at 46C under load. Not much but i haven't pushed it much since i'm using the stock setup. Still it's nice to say I've overclocked my computer.
 
I put the voltage up to 1.85. I can't remember the exact number as it's been a few weeks since I did my last try. But I think I put it up enough.
 
I did update my bios to the latest ASUS has for the board which is the Rev. 2 Build 1007, so I will be testing the whole setup this evening when it cools off some. Right now the temps in the house are around 80+ so I'm not running the machine till it drops into the 70's more along room tempteratures.

But my highest VCore is 1.85. I'm not sure what other settings I could do to make it more stable.
 
An update. I'm running stable with a 1.97ghz speed (11.0 x 179FSB) with the stock HSF, idle temps about 38C and about 45/46C under load. I tried bumping up to 181 FSB and when the computer restarted after the changes, it dropped it down to 1.1ghz (11 x 100 fsb). Does this mean the Vcore needs to be stepped up a bit to account for the increase in the FSB?
