Anybody know if the NT06 works on AM2 sockets, I can't find anything that confirms that it does... Are there any other cheaper options?

yes it definately should. The hsf bracket is the same for 754, 939, and am2. The nt06 is really the best cooler for that case if you have a psu with a 120mm fan on the bottom.
