I'm putting together a new system, and I just finished installing an HR-05 heatsink on my northbridge. However, in the only orientation I can put it in (I also have an Ultra 120 Extreme in there, limiting the orientation), it would either BARELY be touching the back of my 8800GT, or just shy of it. Are there any protective measures I can do so that a distance is kept between them (So there's no shorting) or is putting rubber on the HR-05 in key places a viable option? Thanks in advance.
 
Can you turn the TRUE 90 degrees to better fit the HR-05 along side?
 
I could, but if I did, the fan on the 120e would be blowing down into the case, as I'd have to place it on the opposite side of it.
 
if you dont feel like getting a new heatsink, cut a strip of some material (anything not made of metal), make sure you dont flex the card but very carefully wedge it in there. that takes care of the electrical issues, now just make sure airflow is not obstructed and you're good to go.
 
That sounds like a good solution, mrlithium. Any suggestions on what I should put between the two? And I'll try to take a picture in the morning tomorrow to post here to get a better idea of what it looks like in there.
 
First thing that comes to mind would be a strip of a pure plastic white bubble mailer like the ones Fedex stuff comes in sometimes. Another uglier thing would be cardboard. Foam would be good too, or maybe if you had some strips of black velcro you could use that cause it would stick to the card and youd be sure its not gonna move.
 
I've got some thin foam right here, so that sounds like it should work. Could one predict any heating trouble with the video card with this pressed up against the back of it?

If you're really concerned (personally, I wouldn't be seeing that second image)...

...You can buy some mylar sheet. Mylar is extremely thin, fairly stiff, and is used often to electrically isolate things like MOSFETs from heatsinks. It should be pretty easy to find a way to stick it to the GFX card.

You don't want to block the airflow in the HR-05 heatsink if at all possible.


You should be able to get some mylar sheets from your local drawing supply store.
 
I'll check that out today, then, thanks. And, yeah, there's a little bit of room in there between them, but I'm going to most likely be putting an 80mm fan on the HS, and I'm just afraid that any vibration might touch the two. I might be unnecessarily cautious, but with all these new parts, I'd hate to have a short ruin things.
