it replaces the old rtc (run time clock?) which generated timing for the various interrupts. it isnt any faser or anything, it just has higher granularity, ie, more accurate. it doesnt work on xp or lower, only vista or higher. if you are running a 64 bit os, set it to 64 bits. you are unlikely to see any performance bump.
