HP Z30i

Hey NCX, I thought the VP2770 was one of your top pics at 27"? I watched your video review on it, and it does look really nice - I just wish it was 2560x1600 and 30". :p Would you recommend that Eizo over the 2770?

No get an inferior 30" 16:10 monitor and relive the 2006 glory days already.

The EV2736W's lack of glow is a major advantage but it has slightly worse overdrive (tiny bit of overshoot ghosting, higher lag (17.6ms signal delay measured by PRAD vs. Viewsonic 7.2ms) and USB 2 instead of 3.

...but this Eizo is not IPS monitor. It has PLS panel most probably made by Samsung. Only 97% sRGB coverage.
Oranges to oranges.

Samsung makes PLS. You have a VP2772, my comment was aimed at those who do not need a wide gamut monitor for work=99% of those interested in the Z30i.

Is the VP2770 not also a PLS panel? Is image quality substantially different between the two?

Well, this Z30i might be going back. I'm getting a random, but frequent, flickering/dimming. Does it on DVI and DP. Now the question is, exchange, or refund? Hmmmmm.

So, question - I'm running the Z30i on it's lowest brightness setting. Could this be causing the flickering? I just read a bunch of threads on this, due to LED/PWM - maybe that's the issue! So if it is, WTF does HP or any other manu of these IPS PWM LED monitors allow their product to do this?

Thoughts? NCX, have you seen this on your Z30i? You mentioned you run the lowest brightness as well...

I'm not talking about a constant flicker like a refresh rate, I'm talking about random dimming, bright/dim, at the lowest setting. OR, do I have a faulty monitor? Problem is, if I turn the brightness up any from 0, the IPS glow is that much worse. I'll do some testing tonight.

Haven't tested for pwm yet and wont until Sunday evening. Assumed it would be the same as the 3014 which has a 2500mhz pwm frequency. Some monitors are pwm free down to a certain brightness level, for example some Eizos only use pwm when the brightness is set below 20%. 23/100 is the lowest setting I've used for more than a few minutes

The brightness dis-uniformity is really obvious on mine in games (especially during camera pans), when viewing Word and some web pages. The right side is noticeably darker than the left, so much so that I can drag a window from left to right and see a big difference. My former 360$ Samsung UN32EH5300 had vastly superior brightness uniformity.

Even in color managed programs out of the box colors are awful due to a very strong green tint which I could only partially alleviate with calibration. The Dell U2713H I tested also suffered from a very strong green tint out of the box but it was very easy to get rid of.

Took the Z30i down since I've been reading papers and typing a few for university. ..couldn't stand the dull green tinted whites compared to my BL2710PT & QX2710.

Both use PLS panels and they are pretty similar aside from the lag and glow.

So I did some experimenting last night. I was able to reproduce the flicker/dimming weirdness again. However, it only seems to happen with the brightness all the way down to 0. If I set the brightness on 1 or above, it stops that issue. I think I can deal with that.
I'm getting pretty attached to this monitor.
This thing is TN fast without having to stare at a TN panel. In fact, I've got an old "fast" TN panel with slower response times than this thing. It's fast. While the IPS glow is annoying, what real choice do you have for a 30" screen these days? You don't at anywhere close to this price point.
A 27" is a downgrade for us 30"er guys - straight up. They may offer better colors and less glow, but at an enormous real estate cost.
I think this will hold me until a larger, affordable 4K without bugs comes along.

The resolution (screen real-estate) loss is minor:

and one can sit much closer to a 27" while experiencing far less glow, or no glow if one buys an Eizo EV2736W. The loss of size is pretty trivial considering that most 27" 1440p monitors easily surpass 30" in all areas of performance and typically cost at least 30% less.

Bet you would change your mind about considering 27" a downgrade if you bought an EV2736W. Even if a good, affordable sRGB 30" existed I would never buy one since the glow sucks for my viewing distance (61cm/2ft):

Dang, that EV2736W seems to check all the boxes. How fast is it compared to the Z30i?

I've used 27s before and while the DPI is nice, I really noticed the lack of vertical res and more so the sheer size. Wish EIZO made a 30.

The EV is slightly slower but not enough to worry since it is essentially as fast as the non-overshoot ghosting plagued 1440-1600p monitors get. PRAD's EV2736W pixel response time measurements are basically the same as my/the BL2710PT which is slightly slower than the Z30i.

Don't suppose you have an AMD gfx card, do you? ;)

In a separate machine I do, but this ones using SLi'd 670s. Why?

Ah! I just wanted to test out the validity of the gpu-based sRGB solution that's been discussed here and elsewhere. Supposedly, if you're running an AMD card, you use some of the Catalyst Control Center settings to have it manage the colorspace if the monitor lacks an sRGB preset.

Here's a discussion on this forum: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1319089&page=3

...and another, third post down: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.argyllcms/11448

Any interest in running a test? I can't be the *only* one who would like to know. ;)

If an AMD card can effectively control the wide gamut, then IPS glow is really the last drawback on this display, for me at least. Well, besides the price. :D

What is the trade off between the EV2736W and BL2710PT out of the box and which has less quaity control issues (isn't eizo known for consistent high quality ?)

Just wanted to give an update after 3 weeks or so. Love this monitor. Absolutely awesome gaming monitor. Extremely FAST. This will definitely hold me til a 32-40" 4K display WORTH BUYING comes out. But it's gotta be really good to make me switch. The low input lag and fast response times on this thing will be tough for a 4K display to touch for quite a while.

I guess you were able to make your peace with the IPS glow? Or have you not found it to be too invasive? The oversaturation doesn't bother you either, or you have a workaround? Just curious, 'cause those are the issues that are holding *me* back. :)

While it's definitely not my PVA 30" 305T as far as no glow and nice blacks, it's freakin' FAST.

The IPS glow sucks, but I'm over it. I've also had to put up with IPS glow from a U3011 at work, so it's not my first.

The gaming / video performance is stellar on this thing. Plus the wife is already "attached" to my 305T and she ain't giving it back. :)

This'll do for a few years while 4K gets sorted and dare I say OLED, if that ever happens. Neither tech is ready at this time, money aside. 4Ks got a long way to go as far as HDMI adoption, input lag, pixel response etc. When enough people have vetted these early screens and the GPUs to drive them are realistic at 60FPS minimum, then it'll be time.

Regardless of what others say, a 27" screen is a downgrade for somebody that's been using 30's for 7-8 years. Yes that 16:10 makes a difference. So does the screen size. I've used 27's and the difference was night and day for me. YMMV

Perfect screen for me would be a 32-39" 4K that has the same input lag, pixel response and AG coating of this Z30i.

So is the Z30i upcharge worth getting over the ZR30W?
Size doesn't matter to me and I want one that has the most consistent colors as I'll be doing a lot of doc editing, photoshop, wire-framing, presentations, etc.

Size doesn't matter to you? Then why are you looking at 30" monitors?

Get one of the 27" monitors NCX has mentioned in the thread.

Sorry, I meant to say weight or depth of the monitor doesn't matter.

I know the ZR30W is quite a bit thicker than the Z30i.

Ah, gotcha.

Um, I think both monitors are about equally as incapable of reproducing photo-quality colors. One is not better than the other in that regard. The ZR30W is CCFL backlit vs. LED, so your blacks may be better with the ZR30W, but it's still an IPS screen, so you'll get the glow. I don't think the Z30i LOST any capabilities from the ZR30W, but what it gained may not mean much unless you game with the screen. I think the Z30i has far better anti-glare coating than the ZR30W, but I could be wrong.

Probably best to ask somebody that's had both on their desk, like NCX.

Is the IPS glow really that bad? I have the second Benq BL2710PT and the IPS glow is far worse than on any picture i've seen on reviews etc.
I've seen the pictures from NCX on his review of the Z30i und thought "that's ok, where's the problem?".

I run my monitors at 0 brightness or close to it. I also sit pretty close. 8-10 brightness during the day and 0 in a dark room. During the day it's not bad at all - sometimes not even noticeable at all. At night, brightness all the way down, with a black screen or areas of black in the bottom corners, it's pretty bad. Shockingly bad at first compared to my PVA 30.

I'm already used to it, but I could see how it could be a problem for some, depending on what they're trying to do. I played a dark game at night with it and the glow is definitely there in the bottom corners, taking some of the immersion away. Again, for me, pixel performance/gaming performance and general vivid, fast picture, is worth the trade off.

Ok, then the glow seems to be worse than at the Benq und worse than pictures can capture it (on pictures it seems to be ok).

So does this Z30i have the grainy anti glare coating like the old Dell U3011? Or it has the new one like the U3014?

Also is the Overdrive option in the HP Z30i make the color quality less when it is turned on?
No one knows or has this monitor?

That's what I would like to know as well I actually like the glossy look which has a glossier look if anyone knows that would be great.

No retailers I know of have them for display.

I am trying to decide between the Z30i and the Dell U3014 as mentioned I like the glossy look and would be using it for internet browsing, videos and gaming no photo work or anything like that.

From what I can tell the Z30i might be better because of the overdrive function would that be correct.

Cheers

Is banding very noticeable on the z30i? And what about tint? z30i uses the same panel that is installed in the Dell U3014, but Dell doesn't have any tint or banding. Can someone other than NCX confirm banding and tint on z30i?
